Help with friggin' 700R4 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

hey guys--I'm having problems with the tranny in my truck, and need some help diagnosing. I'd really hate to have to slap a new tranny in, this one is a reman. from ACDelco that was put in less than a year and a half ago, so I'm hoping it's nothing too major....Anyways, it's been slipping a little for the past month and a half or so (kind of a soft skip when it would shift up), then last week, it locked up in 1st; reverse worked fine, but it wouldn't shift any higher in Drive. Now, if I start it cold, it shifts okay (a little loose) for about 15 minutes, then starts to stick more and more until it finally won't shift out of 1st. Once again, reverse works fine. Seems the warmer the tranny gets, the more it f**ks up. Fluid is full, and doesn't look contaminated. I don't know much about trannies, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have you ever had the trans serviced?

A restricted filter will cause symptoms like this but usually you will hear a strange whine also.

Wouldnt hurt to drop the pan and inspect for *Extra* pieces(lets hope not), change the filter and add fresh fluid. Be sure to clean the magnet good after inspecting the pan.
You can tell alot by whats in the pan (clutch particles, broken componants, or debris)

sounds like maybe you have a little piece of dirt or a metal filing in the valve body. 700r4s are not very tolerant to dirt.

Change fluid as suggested, and add a bottle of lube guard. Napa has it I believe.

I have seen 700's with similar issues, get fixed by the lubeguard. Seems to free up valves that get sticky sometimes.
