Installing flame throwers????

HEY OUT THERE I NEED SOME HELP,
I AM LOOKING TO PUT SOME FLAME THROWERS ON MY TRUCK. IT IS A 66 CHEVY STEP SIDE, AND IT HAS A MANUAL CHOKE. NOW COULD I JUST GET SOME COILS AND SPARK PLUGS AND WOULD I GET FLAMES, OR DO I HAVE TO BUY ONE OF THOSE KITS THAT MESSES WITH YOUR DISTRIBUTOR? BECAUSE AS FAR AS I KNOW BACK IN THE DAY THEY DID NOT HAVE THOSE BOXES BACK IN THE DAY THE JUST HAD A MANUAL CHOKE AND SPARK. AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REGULAR 12 VOLT COILS AND MODEL T FORD COILS? IS THE FLAME BIGGER? AND IF THE SET UP THAT I MENTIONED ABOVE WORKS DO YOU GET A GOOD SIZE FLAME?? AND WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THIS INJECTION SYSTEM HOW DOES THAT WORK? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT OR SOMEONE AROUND MY AREA THAT I COULD TALK TO BOUT THIS OR INSTALL IT. I LIVE IN THE CHICAGO LAND AREA. THANKS AGAIN FOR ANY HELP!!!!!!!!!!

So the little black box do-dad from what I understand is mostly for fuel injection. There has to be an interrupt between the spark to the motor and divert it to the coils attached to the plugs in the exhaust. Other wise your not going to get enough fuel through the motor. On trucks like like ours its a lot easier. divert the signal from the points to the coil going to your exhaust via a toggle. Remember you are going to be dumping a lot of gas into the engine. do it to much and you will wash out your rings and really do some damage. If you want to get HUGE flames hook up propane and rig up a valve that will open when you hit the switch.. and you wont have to divert the spark and wont mess up your motor... unless you get a massive back draft. Google it, there are a lot of diagrams and info on the intrawebz. also... no need to type in all caps most of us can "hear" just fine.

There is a very cheap and easy way to do it (especially if running an HEI distributor). I had this same set-up on my '62 a few years back and it worked VERY well. Six to eight foot flames off just the choke. Mine ran an HEI. I ran a wire from the TACH side of the distributor cap to a switch, then to one coil. Anothr wire ran from that coil to one on the other side that ran the other pipe. Both coils were grounded to the frame. I installed the plugs about 4 inches inside the pipes. Bring the motor up to about 1500 RPM and pull the choke, as the motor tries to die, rev it up to about 3000 and hit the switch when you let off. Huge flames should ensue! Running from the tach side of the coil works well because it does interrupt the spark to about four cylinders. Without those cylinders firing it dumps all that unburned fuel into the exhaust. You do need to limit how often and the duration of the flames though because you are washing the cylinders with fuel. This removes the oil from the cylinder walls and piston rings which will destroy their seal by galling the wee out of them. But done right, it works very well.

I would go the propane route hooked up to a valve. It would save your motor and isn't hard to do at all!

Thanks for every ones help, on how to do this. Sorry bout the whole caps thing i was just trying to make it easier for people to read.. Anyways had a question for ruffrida2005, you said something bout propane? Where could i find out how to set that up?

If you really want some flames...you could always run some NOS jets and solenoids, and feed raw gas into the pipes near the spark plugs....

thanks ChiefRocka, for the reply. See here is the story, where i am from which is the chicagoland area. There is a guy named voodoo larry that knows how to do the injection system, I would rather have that because i do not want to mess up my motor by doing it the so called "traditional way". But also i really don't know how that set up works and i know he isn't the only guy that knows how to do it. And i don't want to do it myself and blow up if i don't do it right. Well take care

Gas injection is pretty simple too. A reserve tank, an elecric fuel pump (the more pressure the better) and something as simple as 1/8 inch copper lines with pinched ends works well. Nitrous solenoids and FOGGER jets work great. you still rev your motor for distance, but no harm is done.
