Need to help my brother find a part

My brother is restoring his 1978 Suburban and is looking for some sort of part that he says is designed to hold the rear of the hood down flush with the cowl. Here's what he writes, "Meanwhile I am in need of the hood hold down brackets . This is a two part piece that pulls the rear of the hood down when you lower the hood from the front. The part that mounts to the firewall has a cone shaped apparatus on the end that engages a simple u-shaped bracket mounted to the underside of the hood. The cone shaped end slides into the bracket and pulls the rear of the hood down flat with the body as the hood is lowered. I need both pieces."

I searched LMC's catalog and just don't see anything close to that. I know this is in the wrong forum so I apologize for that, but for some reason I'm blocked from any other forum but the 67-72 group.

Can someone help me first identify this part and then possibly direct me to a source for one?

Re: Need to help my brother find a part

Having never seen one on the later trucks, I have to believe that it is an aftermarket assembly.

Re: Need to help my brother find a part

i have never seen such an animal... i've had MANY on and off in the 80s when i worked in dealer body shop .. when the back of your hood does not lay down with the cowl i believe your stock hinges have issues. binding up or loose and sloppy. lube the h3ll out of them. those hoods had a tendency to buckle just in front of the hinges due to tight hinges.

Re: Need to help my brother find a part

i have a 78 suburban, and there is nothing like what he describes.
If the trear of the hood sticks up, then it needs the hood/hinges adjusted, or new springs on the hinges.

Re: Need to help my brother find a part

I believe what he is looking for is a piece that was early 80's. It may have been 80 only to work with the 73-80 style hood.

It was designed by GM to prevent the hood from lifting up on impact. It mounts in the center of the firewall and the bottom rear of the hood.

Thanks, it sounds like you recognize the part. Now to locate one for him. First to identify the name of the part. If you do have a picture I might could send it to my brother and confirm if this is the part he's looking for.

Actually, I never heard of or seen one of these...but would like to.

I am hoping Ken might, since he knows a little about them.

Thanks very much. I am going to send these pics to my brother and see if this is in fact what he's talking about. If so, how much do you want for it?

Re: Need to help my brother find a part

My 79 Blazer has one and so does the 80 1ton that my dad just bought. Up until I got my Blazer I had never seen or heard of one either. If it wasn't dark out right now i'd take a picture of them.

Re: Need to help my brother find a part

I was able to take the pictures anyway.
Gotta love the canon rebel.

The part in the hood

The part on the firewall

My dad told my that these were to keep the hood from going through the windshield in a head on collision.
