Replacing upper control arm cross shaft studs
The big studs on a 76-72 crossmember that the upper control arm cross shafts bolt to..
The rear one on each side of mine is very rotted away. After blasting, they're about 1/3 smaller than they are supposed to be I see that LMC sells replacements but do they just press out? I whacked one with a hammer pretty good, but it wasn't moving and I don't think I can get this thing positioned on my press to squeeze it out. Anybody done this before? |

Re: Replacing upper control arm cross shaft studs
there is a serrated/knurled edge close the the head of the bolt. That is there to hold the bolt from spinning when someone is trying to align the truck. If you can get a socket to the head of the bolt with an impact gun, you might be able to spin the bolt and get it to come out. Need to pull the new bolts in by tightening the nut to press the serrated edge in place.

Re: Replacing upper control arm cross shaft studs
Argh, well my little 12 ton press is a tad small, I can't wedge the crossmember in there.
Hammered again, nothing. Tried to use a big c clamp, cracked the clamp frame. Ugh, I guess I gotta pay somebody to remove the dang things for me. cparman: the bolt head is round, so unfortunately, if I had a size X round socket head, I still don't think it would work :P UPDATE...Heated them with a torch, two handed swing with BFH, finally got them out. Thanks guys! Last edited by mplex2000; 10-17-2009 at 05:12 PM. |
