At some point, I'm going to have to replace my windshield. It's cracked, to say the least. I'm concerned, though, that there is some rust around the seal, and I'm not sure how this is going to affect the installation of a replacement windshield. I'm sure several of you have dealt with this before and could let me know what I'm getting myself into. Thanks.

When it comes to a winshield, I let the glass guys do it...but someone will have some good suggestions for you.

I had this problem on a '72 I had. The lip that the seal hooks up to was ate up a little bit. The glass guys were able to get it to work though. Really depends on the extent of the rust. Get a new seal, it'll help some.

Safelite just put one in my 72. I watched the guy do it and decided I was glad that I paid them to do it instead of trying it myself. It looked like a real pain in the butt. Plus, it was less than $200 with the seal.

it really depends on if there is any solid metal to mount the winshield to// i had a casb once that i took the glass out and the whole winshield frame just came apart in chunks

I would think it would be common sense to have the windshield frame repaired and free of all rust before installing a new windshield. Two reasons: 1. That's the easiest time to do it and 2. It's just going to get worse until you do something about it. Just my $.02.

Sandblast your corrosion and weld it back up if needed and grind it down. then prime and paint it,
At a minimum I would sand what you can and put POR-15 or some other corrosion inhibitor on it to slow it down.

If you are going to attempt a install youself-

You'll need a bottle of dishsoap and some cotton 3/8ths rope, lube the rubber seal up real good with the dishsoap, make sure the rubber is warm too, it'll fight you twice as much if its cold, put the seal on the windshield, slip the rope into the channell and position the whole thing on the truck, you pull the cord to get the lip of the seal to jump over the channel on the truck, OBTW it aint easy. Be careful smacking the glass at the corners it will crack easier than you think.

If you can get the glass and seal and instal for under 200 I would do that, the windshield and seal cost me 140!

Sometimes when guys chop these trucks they lay the windshield in on a bed of sealant like newer windshields are installed, of course you'll have to figure out a way to trim it out to hide the edge.
