71 gmc with powerglide
Will someone show me a picture of their linkage that is working.
I think I'm missing some parts or something. Is there supposed to be a spring where my finger is pointing?
Currently the bracket is loose and will slip out from the transmission bracket. I aint got something right... help please.
Can't remember taking it apart.

37 minutes.I doubt anyone with the info you need has looked at this thread yet.They may be working on their trucks,spending time at church or with their family or just watching a ball game.I don't think they are blackballing you just living their lives instead of lurking here waiting to give you an immediate answer.

You are looking in the wrong spot, the problem is the section that attaches to the trans. If you will notice there is a hole in the pawl that is attached to the trans. A spring and washer with a cotter pin hold everything together and prevent it from coming apart. You are missing the spring, washer and cotter pin. 1) Leave the assembly as it appears go to lowes and in hardware they have a box assortment of springs for 3.95, buy a pack of cotter pins 1" long and a large diameter 5/16" diameter hole washer. 2) install the spring- it should be a silver spring in the kit roughly a 1" long. and approx. 3/8" in diameter 3) place the flat washer against the spring creating tension and pushing the lever against the shift bracket 4) install the cotter pin 5) problem solved

Now that you've said that, you can see in the picture where a spring used to be on there, It has some little worn places in the "pawl" as you called it. Good deal; appreciate it.

Here is a slightly blurry picture of the linkage. There are two washers with rectangular holes(to fit over the bracket attached to the transmission) on either side of the spring.
