1967 Special Order Steering wheel and horn unit
Just curious if anyone has seen one of these before. 1967 truck SPID:
9939A HORN UNIT 9828L STEERING WHEEL UNIT I've asked before but everyone seems to think I'm talking about the CST style horn cap. This was from a very original truck with a few other neat options. Thanks, Sharpie |

I've been watching for someone to post up info, apparently nobody knows about it. It does look alot like a '67 Impala wheel with a different cap and smooth horn bar instead of the "groove" in the 3 spokes on an Impala.

I agree, I have a 67 Belair wheel and horn ring, but this one is a little different. I would call "bull****" myself, but the glove box door confirms it was original to the truck. I'm still researching the origins of the truck. At this point I'm leaning towards U.S. Government special ordered Forest Service unit. The 283 governor unit was really something. Just hoping someone has some info. or has seen another like it. Sharpie

Nope, same diameter as stock, see pics next to 68th anniversary wheel (currently for sale on the board). Also very similar to the 67 Belair/Impala wheel in pics, but not exact. Suggested that it may have been a carry over from the 66 model year, but no confirmation on that theory either. Sharpie

Mystery solved as to the pedigree of the wheel! I continued bringing wheels out of my collection (Good Sunday therapy!) and this one matches up exactly to a 67 Chevelle unit, right down to the GM cast "D" in the rear plastic and horn cap interchange. Now the question... How did it end up on a truck? True special order? Ran low on 67 wheels? Had not received shipment of wheels yet and needed to get this one off the line and delivered to the U.S. Government before the contract expired? Any input would be appreciated. Sharpie

A little further research shows that the Chevelle horn caps read "CHEVELLE" or "SS" , the blue Bowtie may be a truck only oddity, Sharpie

Another thought too. If the bowtie cap was made up to just use for this truck option, why wouldn't they have made the bowtie red to coordinate with the grille and fenders red bowties? I'm thinking that some 66-67 Chevelle Malibu or other Chevy used that cap also. But I'm not doubting GM did some very odd options for customers in the day. Neat wheel with that option list to back it up as a true oddity.

I was thinking maybe Malibus don`t say Malibu and have a bow tie.Then,I remembered the 300s and as I was about to post this I see you brought them up.I`m thinking this is a very good possibility.That still doesn`t cancel the fact that it`s odd to have a car steering wheel come in a truck.Especially on a truck with no comfort & convenience options or any other cosmetic options.

Ahh, but looking at the option sheet it was the optional custom cab model with the Z62 option. It was the later one without the bucket seats but still with the fancier cab and door panels, chrome vent wings etc.

DOH!! How did I miss that?I scrolled up real quick to check it when I was posting.Must have glanced too quick.It`s still odd to have focused on a thing like that compared to how the rest was ordered.
This doesn`t explain how it could be so rare,but could it have something to do with cars going to padded steering wheel centers in`68?It`s like GM was using up old stock.

Something just clicked about this. It has a special horn listed first then the steering wheel unit. Maybe the truck has a specification to meet that called for a certain decibel horn(s) and two ways to activate? I have seen some weird specs from government agencies for the low bid process and if it is slighted to go the competitors brand to rule out one bid by specs something may have been modified for this spec. If that is truely a government ordered truck I would bet anything was possible in those Ralph Nader years.
