Emissions junk on an 86' 454.
I want to get rid of all of it! I'm going to have the carb re-built at a local carb shop and do a tune up/new timing set and fluid change in the next couple weeks. While I have everything torn apart, I want to get rid of all of the odds and ends for emissions. The motor should run better I imagine.... At the moment there are hoses disconnected (HUGE vacuum leaks) screws in other hoses to block them off as well as other troublesome BS. (it was an old farm truck...That should explain the rig-job under the hood.) It DOES have AC, power windows and locks though. I'm not worried about that good stuff yet, I'm focusing my attention on the drivetrain at the moment.
Suggestions, concerns, questions..... Anything? haha

if the truck has the 10,000 lb gvwr it should only have a smog pump. im in california and i passed emissions with no cats. by getting rid of the smog pump you wont notice a difference. i would reccomend a edelbrock 1407 carb, and make her breathe. my .2 cents.

Not a fan of the Quadrajet? The truck only has 58,000 original miles on it but it sat for a couple years (just moved around the guys property). The carb rebuild should only be a hundred bucks or so.

What are the emissions laws in NY? That would likely dictate what you could leave on or pull off.

I agree with Bob. I would check your local emissions before you take too much off. Some states only do visual inspections, others go all out and it all has to be functioning. I'm lucky here in Oklahoma we don't have either. So all mine came off with the engine swap.
Also welcome to the boards. Glad to have you here. Last edited by JohnC; 01-20-2010 at 10:46 AM. |

Re: Emissions junk on an 86' 454.
I believe only 1996+ are checked for emissions. With this 86' I don't think I need anything. I bought it with no cats but I have no idea if that was a factory exhaust.
