it seems we all want Big ponies...fuel mileage not being an issue what do you think could be built to run everyday on pump ( say mid grade ) fuel...also must be able to run everyday??

I want the cady transplant and understand that the new 572 would be sweet but who has $12k to spend on a motor

??? so lets try to keep the build within reason .....

I have seen some blown motors that seem like they may do it??
yea I want my cake and to be able to haul it too??well how about enough to peal the ds front up a bit

Horsepower costs money......how fast can you afford to go? If $12k is too much, what's your budget? $3k? $6k? Any engine platform or strictly BBC?

I'm a firm believer in the LS engines, extremely reliable, respond well to modifications, plus you get mileage. Get yourself an LQ9(3500), standalone wiring harness(500), high pressure fuel pump/system(600), conversion engine mounts and flex plate(200) and your in business. Start there, later put a cam/springs/pushrods in(600), carb intake(700), P&P the heads(500), full exhaust(500). You can start off with the stock engine at 400 horses and with all the mods I listed, end up with probably just over 500.

i'm also a turbo fan. Considering the price of a new Silverado, i feel these 2 are very good values:

Nelson and Banks both have turnkey twin turbo SBC's for 26-27K. Considering the hp 800-1000, i feel these prices are very reasonable. This is an engine you could use for daily transportation.

If you want pump gas, driveability and go really freeking fast,, TURBO is all I'm gonna say. It's pretty freeking amazing what there doing with turbos now.

Have a canuk buddy with a thunderchicken that drives 80 miles one way on DOT sticky's, clicks off high 8's @ 160 and drives home. Carm is plain NUTZ without a doubt, but roughly 1000HP SBC that can drive 80 miles on pump gas,, add some octane at the track and run that fast is simply amazing to me. Agreed he's not driving a truck or carrying that weight,, but still........

Not hiding a thing. You can see the pass at the link in my signature. I have been down for a long time but I hope to have it back out soon and should improve a bunch. I'm adding 80 cubic inches and more spray.

start with this and add speed parts as you get the money, it's a pretty good price for an all-forged bottom end and 502 cubic inches

or you could go with a tried and true 383, a good one with a scat crank and h-beam rods shouldn't cost you over about $$3000 if you stay with a flat-tappet and iron heads. or for a bit more you could go all out with a roller cam and AFR heads ....................or start with this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DRT-31161211/ and build a 400

That combo would be perfect for a BBC turbo setup, or even through on some nice heads/intake and that motor would put down some nice numbers.

I have a very good race engine shop (nascar/busch engines) localy if I could find a good package I'm sure they could do all the machine work..I have no problem doing the assembly..then bringing it back to them to do the break in and some dyno pulls If they know its going in my old truck that will go a mile ....it will be something different and maybe put a little fun back in to the shop

SBC with a turbo. You can have everything you asked for with this combo. Cheap (within reason), reliable, power and even some decent mileage.

If you run an EFI setup and a boost controller you can have adjustable power at the turn of a knob. There is one company that make a fuel sensor or system that can detect the type of fuel you are running and it will adjust the pressure ect based on the fuel type. You want to run E85, C16, 93 octane, go ahead you don't have to make any adjustments.

Of course a SBC with EFI and turbo is more then $5k but can be done for less then $12k and you should have better numbers. If you only had $5k then I would consider a BBC.

You could get a 572 720hp for 12k, so that twin turbo seems crazy. But what about ridinhighs build, he belives to get more than 500hp in a 489 or 486 stroker, for under 5k. not a turn key but would be nice and could have built.

Well if you had a bigger budget you could have the best of both worlds and buy the Banks Duramax crate engine. You would have all the torque in the world and economy to boot.

OR

You could get extremely wild, Banks has the Duramax marine motor that is blown and twin turboed. Take off the existing bell housing, change the watercooled exhaust manfolds, and water cooled turbo housing, then your on your way to a one of a kind BEAST!!

5.3L, 4L80E, turbocharged. It seems small, but it will get better gas mileage than a 6.0L when cruising around with the boost turned off. With an intercooler and alcohol/water injection you could run a decent amount of boost on premium fuel.

^^^Those little 5.3's are tough as nails too. We have a local guy that has a junkyard 150k mile 5.3, mild cam, 76mm turbo and th400 in a mid 80's RX7. Granted the thing is gutted and stupid light (2600lbs race weight), but it goes high 9's at 144mph in the 1/4 mile on mild boost.

You will pay big bux for high HP turn keys.

Well I have a new Blueprint 383 forged w/ Dart alum heads @ 9.5 to 1
Dyno : 438hp/474 lbs tq and I love it and the warranty ... best $6k I ever spent.

This is my daily driver, but the latest plans are showing a Garrett GT40 in it's future.

... just changed the 500 mile break-in oil ...
