A/C help
I'm redoing the A/C in the 77 suburban. I'm installing a system out of an 88. The parts are in better shape and replacements are easier to find. I talked to a local A/C guy and he told me as a standard practice to replace the accumulator and orifice tube. Do I really need to do that? Also, where is the orifice tube in the 88 system? While yes, you should, you don't have to if the system was charged and working fine. If the system has be open (unhooked), then definitely replace them. IIRC, the orifice tube is located in the high side line going into the evaporator.

Is the system out of a truck? GM moved the orfice tube behind the grill next to the condensor. Our trucks have the orfice tube in the engine bay.

I found the orifice tube for the 77 in the bottom line of the evaporator core. The 88 system doesn't have a tube in it-at the condenser or the evaporator. The 88 system is from Arizona, could the PO possibly removed it? The bottom line of the 88 evaporator core has the indent in the line to accomadate the orifice tube. Do you see any problem getting a new one for a model year 77 and and using it? Many thanks, Tom |

If you are going to use an 88 system, use the condensor too. Stock square body condensors are too small for R-134 conversions. If you keep the stock condensor, use Freeze 12 instead of R-134. New hoses are recommended too. New hoses will have a barrier between the outter and inner walls. Our truck's hoses did not have this barrier. Over time the hoses leaked.
If the 88 didn't have an orfice tube someone removed it. Clean the system using alcohol and compressed air. Or use a can of A/C flush available at parts stores. I can provide a link to a R-134 conversion if you need it. |

I'm going to use the stock 77 condenser. I've had it cleaned. I plan on flushing all from front to back. Had to use the 77 condenser, the 88 wouldn't fit-to wide. I'll need to get new hoses in order to get the 77 vs. 88 matched up. I'm using the 88 compressor. The local A/C guy said that the old 77 compressor wouldn't handle the pressure for long.
