Caddy 500 in a 62

Hey everyone,
I've finally got the chance to put a Caddy 500 in my 62 but I have a few questions. My truck was an I6 with a 3 on the tree manual transmission. The 500 is coming with one of 3 Turbo 400 tranny's. I have the choice of a long medium and short core, but I'm not sure which is the best length for the truck. What length would fit best? Also the main block I'm looking at is bored .030 over, the deck has been resurfaced, the mains aligned and new cam bearings installed. He also says that it has about 50km on it but it spun a rod bearing so it disassembled it, would it still be worth it? There is also a second assembled short block that I plan on picking up as well.

He says he has 4 blocks 3 tranny's and other parts and I can have it all for $500 but I don't have the space. I'm just taking a look at my options

Do a member search for Longhorn Man and send him a PM asking for his build thread on his 70 Longhorn. He put a 500 Caddy in it and he's the local expert on them.

Re: Caddy 500 in a 62

I just picked up a complete 500 and turbo 400 out of an Ambulance for 150.00 from a buddy of mine.

I figure I'll end up putting a rering kit in it and having the valves done so I will know what I have when I put it in my 71 GMC.

Any shaft length will work on the trans but the short shaft is probably the easiest to work with in the swap. You will have to have a driveshaft built anyhow.

Depending on what exhaust manifolds come with the engine you may have to so some swapping around there. Some may have clearance issues.

There is a thread on here somewhere about putting a 425 then later a 500 in a Suburban by a guy from BC Canada One of the guys over on the west side of Washington helped him do it and they pretty well covered the swap. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=290786 Good thread on doing the swap.

Great old engines but don't expect fuel mileage. If it's coming apart do it right, have the block tanked, and use new cam and lifters and have the heads done. They run forever if built right but expect poor mileage no matter what you do.
