Rear mount gas tank questions
I want to put a tank in the back and eliminate the in cab tank. I have a 64 short stepside and I don't want the filler in the bed. Has anyone out there done any fillers that come out the side or rear and do you have pics of the finished look. Thanks.

On the back of the fender (stepside) doesn't look too offensive if done right. My '64 short fleet used to have the filler behind the tail-light. Sounds like a good idea but it sucked.

I am currently gathering parts to move the tank. I have decided to go with a Jeep fuel fill. they are pretty cheap and easy to come buy on ebay. Paid $20 with shipping for mine. Dont have any installed photos yet as I am still gathering parts for the conversion sorry.

I originally mounted a 1967 series C10 filler neck on the driver side bed wall, under the rear fender near the top. At the time I was going to be running a hard cover on the bed, so I ran a sealed gas cap and mounted the roll over/vent valve in this location. A local muffler shop bent up a piece of exhaust tubing to connect the neck to the custom Rock Valley tank.
The setup worked perfectly - except - for one design flaw. When I designed the tank, I had them fabricate an inlet elbow on top of the tank (circled in photo). The radius of the turn was too short, and unless the tank was filled at dead slow, gas would kick back, shutting off the pump nozzle. It took forever to fill the 33 gallon tank. There was plenty of room for a longer inlet, I just hadn’t considered the short radius neck a potential problem. To retain the side fill arrangement, I needed to either replace the elbow on the tank with a baloney slice opening on top, or relocate the inlet to the side of the tank. Either repair would have allowed fuel to freely enter. By the time I discovered the problem the truck was my daily driver and I lived 40 miles from town, so I couldn’t afford to be without it long enough to pull the tank and have a radiator shop modify the opening. Instead I pulled the tank, filled it with water, cut a new hole and installed an aircraft gas cap directly through the floor. The tank was dried out, refilled and reinstalled in time for work on Monday. I was really disappointed it didn’t work out, since it was very convenient to access and would have worked fine if the tank opening was modified. I’ve never seen anyone else install the filler in this location, which is a very clean solution and avoids the problems associated with a floor fill. |

Thanks a lot for the ideas. I will review all the post threads on gas tank installations and figure it out. My box is in pieces and I'm almost down to bare frame so now's the time to do it right.

Hey has anyone used the jeep cj fuel tank for the rear bed install on a short bed?
The dimentions seem to be about as good as you could get.... Capacity: 15 Gallons/57 Liters Dimensions: 25-1/4 X 18-1/4 X 10-7/8 inches Short filler pipe - 1 inches Small gauge hole - 2 inches inside diameter Long vent pipe - 6 inches Last edited by Russ65C10; 05-27-2010 at 04:05 PM. |

Where would you put it, on the fender? Seems like that would look pretty gnarly, and not the good gnarly.

I talking about using the Jeep fuel tank instead of a Blazer tank. It would go under the bed behind the axle where you would normally mount the Blazer tank.
Our short beds don't have a lot of room for a big tank under the bed. I'm trying to find something that will fit, is inexpensive and doesn't take a bunch of modificaitons to install. |

I use my truck as a truck, so I don't really want the filler inside the bed. My plan is to put the filler inside the stake pocket, fabbing an oversize "pocket" if necessary. Before I get myself into trouble, has anyone actually done this, or at least seen one like this?

Haven't seen it done, but If you choose to do this, make sure you minimize the number of sharp turns in the fill pipe. Refer to my post #6 above for the problems I ran into. I really liked my solution, but after a lot of work designing and installing, it failed in actual use.
