Rear end swap

Hi guys,
I just joined cuz I'm building a 1961 Apache and i have a lot of questions lol! I'm putting in a stroker motor and i want to upgrade the brakes so i contacted CPP about a big brake kit for the rear and they said no one makes a kit for the 1960-1963 C-10s. So my crazy idea was to swap the rear to a 1965 or 1966 10 bolt that i found at a near by wrecking yard, to be able to use a big brake kit. Other than moving the pan hard bar, is it plausible?

Another board member( captain fab )makes brackets to do rear disc brakes with a twelve bolt rear and five lugs check with him.

Thanks for the response, but the rear end in my truck now and the new one im looking at are both 10 bolt.

If you found a 10 bolt rear end under a '63-'72 truck it is likely a Dana 44. Most of these (not all) were found under GMC's and with leaf springs. If it's not a Dana 44 then it's not the original rear end. It could be from a '81-'87 truck or Suburban. If you are wanting bigger rear drum brakes, there isn't anything available for the Dana 44's either. You will need to go with a 12 bolt from '64-'70 in a C10 or a K10 thru '80. The 2 1/2" wide brakes were available from about '75 on up and can be retrofitted onto the older 12 bolts. And of course the 6 lug versions were only available in the K10's.

When swapping a newer rear end under your truck, no matter which year, you will have to relocate the trailing arm mounts since the '60-'62's are farther apart than the '63-'72's.

Thats what I had to do. Weld new perches on a 72 rearend. Have disc up front every thing works great. Wasn't too hard just pulled out my wallet. I can weld a little but felt safer with it being done by a real welder!
