HEAT or CUT Coil Springs??

I have a budget till july so i wont be able to buy my ECE 4/6 drop kit anytime soon...does anyone know how i could mess around with the stock springs till then?

cut one loop off the front and put a set of J body springs ( or jeep tj) in the rear .....done...

bewbest way i've found to cut springs is with a cutoff wheel

its best to start by cutting 1/2coil and see how you like it then if you need more cut somemore// once cut you cant glue them back

4/4 or so do a search this has been talked about a million times..its low buck easy and you don't have to fight with U bolts on the axle..if your going to cut the front one put them in a bucket of water clamp a set of vise grips on where you want to cut and use a wiz wheel...also if you plan to do any work out back go spray the bolts TODAY with some PB blaster

I'm sure you'll get alot of replies on this subject, but my opinion is to never heat the springs. I've cut 1 coil and sometimes 1 1/2 coils off. I think each coil equals about a 2" drop. Get new drop springs when you can afford it though.

Another vote for cut, not heat. Heat can really mess with the ride.

The rear you can't cut, but you can do 2" lowering blocks back there for cheap.

Thanks alot guys,,my dad also said to cut if anything lol but how much loops should i cut for a 4/6 drop. or how should these springs measure afterwards?

If you have heavy duty front springs ie if you cant put a 3/4 inch wrench over the wire 1 1/4 coils is max without problems. if they are the light ones ie 3/4 wrench will fit over wire 1 1/2 is max you can cut without problems. Cant cut rear. Take shocks off and use heat but dont heat the center of spring. lay the spring down on it self at the bottom, if that makes sense. allow for rear to settle.

I don't think you're going to get a 4/6 drop with just cutting springs without running into problems.

For cheap, I'd cut 1 coil off the front and put a 2 inch block in the back, that will give you about a 2/2 drop for very little $$

My truck was dropped by heating the coils by previous owner and it sucks big time. It bounces over bumps and the ride quality is terrible. I am going to replace them with stock ride height springs that a friend gave me. I do like the way it looks but not the way it rides.

Definately do not heat the coil springs. This is what my truck looked like when I bought it home the first day. I spent the money and bought new 5" drop springs for the back.

That's almost funny! There's only half of a coil that's not touching the others! Crazy that it wasn't sitting on the bumpstops.

someone heated the springs on the 70 GMC I used to have and it rode awful. I'd hit a bump at 65 mph and it would drop down a gear!!! not good.

nothing wrong at all with cutting the front ones just don't cut to much or you will run into geometry issues. Like stated the rear is a whole other issue. Looks like the jeep springs are a good idea.

FYI I recently cut 1 1/4 coil off my front and used a 5" rear lowering kit from ECE and this is my final result for only $400 rides good too.

I've already got 5" drop rears, but I am really curious about the jeep springs. Anyone with pics? What years of jeeps? Why aren't more people doing this?

years ago I worked at the local chevy dealership over here and one saturday when we where closed heated the fronts up well as everyone has said dont do it well it lowered the truck but rode rough then later I clamped the rears down and welded them together got the looks I wanted but rode like crap now im going to do it right time for the resto
