67-72 frame modern steering box
I heard there is a swap of a late 80's or 90's power steering box onto a 67-72 Chevy frame.
Do you have pics or info on this swap? What years or models boxes work best? Do the shafts need to be modified? What about the pitman arm? |

Re: 67-72 frame modern steering box
The steering box you need is the '69-'87 C-series (2wd) truck based box. The Suburbans were the same thru the '91 model year. The '69-'80 boxes have the inverted flare fittings and the '81-'87's have a metric with O-ring fitting. You can use the pitman arm that came with the box if it is in good condition. I don't think you will need to modify the theering shaft. On the '69-'72 frames it is a direct bolt on. On the '67 & '68 frames you may need to ad a .250" spacer as the dimple in the frame may not be deep enough.

Re: 67-72 frame modern steering box
Captainfab, am I right in thinking that if I snag a box from any C-series '69-'91 suburban it will be a direct bolt on to my '71 suburban with no modifications? Thanks.

Re: 67-72 frame modern steering box
That is correct. One thing to look out for is that '81 and later had metric sized fittings with O-rings instead of the inverted flare on the earlier boxes. If you can't find an older style box, you can change the pressure fitting on your pump to the metric sized one. You'll just need to get the fitting from a '81 and later pump. Of course you could just run the later pump too.

Re: 67-72 frame modern steering box
what year did the boxes go from like 18:1 (or whatever) to the 13-16:1 variable ratio?
