Installing woodgrain glove box

I have an existing woodgrain glove box, and I ordered the "decals" before I found out what a pain/junk they are. Do I need to remove the old backing on the glovebox before I put the new one on? Or would the new one just go right over the old one to add some rigidity to it?


As far as woodgrain inserts, is everyone leaving the backing on them for strength and just using 3m or contact cement?

I found out the hard way just like you that the decals aren't good, so I threw them on the tool box. There is a guy by the name of Gary Terry, aka Cheyenne Superman that does restorations on them. You might try a search for his info. I'm not sure if he's a supporting vendor or I'd give you the info here.

Gary is a member but rarely has time to get on the board.

I would like to get a redone woodgrain however money is quite tight these days and I cant afford to send those out...

I guess I will just contact cement over the original and overlay the new decal

You need a heat gun as well. I have tried contact cement before on the vinyl. It holds it pretty good, but you need to heat up the vinyl and stretch it a little bit, as it will still want to shrink a little in the heat. I am restoring some myself with some NOS woodgrain. Trevor
