49 Chevy 1/2 Ton Steering box question
Working on rebuilding the steering box on my 49. Not sure how to get the bottom bearing race and keeper off. Any one have any ideas? The keeper doesn't seem to have a way to remove it.
Thanks |

Re: 49 Chevy 1/2 Ton Steering box question
Any chance you have to pull the whole column so it disassembles and slides off the other end? Or it might just be a pressed sacrifical fit? Just a thought....I've never had one apart.

Re: 49 Chevy 1/2 Ton Steering box question
I bought the repair kit and it had the same pages included. What I can't figure out is how to get the end bearing off.
Shaft is disassembled, but the bearing won't come off over the worm gear. Only other way is to some how remove the conical shaped retainer on the bottom of the shaft. That is what I can't figure out. |

According to the manual for overhauling steering gears you twist off the collar. But you need a replacement. Is there one in the kit?
