I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
so yesterday morning i was driving my truck and i got on it. got up to about 95-100 and i felt the biggest clunk and thrashingly wicked noise.. first i thought i blew the motor up.. got out and looked and my rear u-joint was snapped, and my tranny was leaking fluid real bad. well when i got it up in the air, i noticed the bellhousing broke all the way around the tranny and it came apart.. i replaced it with a rebuilt turbo 350 with a shift kit and new mounts and torque converter the hole 9 yards.. and i have the new tranny in now and i love it but what would cause this to happen..? did the torque converter blow apart and make things go bad or did the case brake first or was it all the u joint? ill get some pics of my two halves of a tranny soon lol

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
It was probably the U joint unless it happened on the 2-3 shift. If it happened then (2nd-3rd shift) the trans may have acidentally went to rev. I have seen both cause what you are describing.

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
well i need some help guys.. i drove her all day yesterday with no issues other than a leak at the kickdown cable. today i was driving it and at a cruise i have a bad pulsation/vibration.. even at idle. and when i shift it, i can feel the shaking in the shifter. could my torque converter bolts be coming loose? or even the bolts from the tranny to the block? i really dont want to destroy this tranny

Pop the cover and Look, doubt it's coming off the block but that's easy to check as well.

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
check around for a vacum line you may have knocked off while swapping the trany....another thing to check is to see if the driveshaft and the new U joint are straight and tightened down correctly....you may have put bend in the DS or knocked some of the weight off so its getting out of line every day ..expecially if your "Getting on it"

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
I would pull that driveshaft and get it balanced. The trans coming apart like that could have also hurt the engine.

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
well figured out my shaking problem, or most of it, and im kind of embarased to say but i forgot to put lock washers on the tranny to the block and they started to loosen.. doh! didnt do any harm though. i pulled them one by one and used brand new bolts and lock washers and theres most of my shaking. im pretty sure my drive shaft has a bend in it.. could i just pull one out of a junk yard? wouldnt that be already balanced? and i think i messed up the rear end during that hole deal too because going into reverse now makes a nice thud.. i thought it might be the new tranny but i got under it and it is for sure the rear end.. well its time to ditch the one wheel wonder and 10 or 12 bolt 3.73 posi

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
Well we all do something like that at one point or another. No worries.
A junk yard shaft will be better than the one you have now but you might want to still consider having it balanced. If your going to upgrade the rear then its a good idea and alittle added insurance that everything will stay and work for a long time. Just my 2 cents.

Yep- she'll spin nice and straight and with little to no vibration. Better to do it right the first time! If you got the money!

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
ya i hear ya.. i got a couple offers on my mustang and im thinking about letting my first car go so i can get that rear ens and finish my vortec build.. the offers were no where near what id like to get out of it but, it would get my truck all done and maybe leave enough to get it painted the way i want

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
I hate those decisions! Not fun. Ive had a 87 and 89 5.0's. Great cars and chicks dig'em!
But when it came down to it my 75 stepside came first and foremost. Truck parts were cheaper too! Good luck dude

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
mines a gt350 with a H.O. 302 and its quick. and it was my first car that i worked on for two years to get running.. its rare, fast, and fun but i still dont think that outweighs the fact that its a ford.. lol after buying my truck i have to say even with all the trouble ive had with it, i will never buy another ford.. theyre 4637459237456 times worse! lol

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
hey hey hey calm dwn with the ford talk haha. I got a 04 mustang gt that is/was a great car. granted im on my 4 engine but thats due to a few issues haha. I bought the car brand new in 04 between deployments and its been a project ever since. as it sits now it has no drivetrain but top of the line suspension and a pro-mod strength rear end. Mustangs are great cars but they are not as near usefull or practical as a truck.

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
well i got in my truck this morning anad she hadno reverse.. i was furious.. i called the tranny guy and he sed i had to take it out and bring it back so i did that and he swaped the bad one out for another rebuilt one and he gave me back 100 bucks to cover fluid and labor and such. he called me later and said a clutch blew up or something.. o well **** happens i guess. any way i got that all back in and went for a test drive and my u-joint slid out of the driveshaft in the rear and started shaking really bad. luckily it didnt break anything this time. i got a new u-joint and put it in the drive shaft and i put a tack weld on each end to hold it in so it wouldnt slide out again. my driveshaft is bent pretty bad and every junkyard i checked has bent driveshafts in them from picking the trucks up with forks. so iguess im going to start hunting for a truck being parted out privately around here..

Re: I screwed some stuff up.. BADD
Have a custom drive shaft made. it doesnt cost that much. Well atleast not in MN. I had the same problem/hell happen to me in my dad's 66 tempest. Doing about 80 down the road and BANG!! motor still running i pull over and the front of the tranny almost touching the ground, the back of the tranny hitting the floor and the drive shaft snaped in half still attched to the rear end (the other half i picked up out of the ditch). Turns out the flex plate is different between a powerglide and a turbo 400. So make sure you got the right flex plate in there for your tranny!!!!
