motor mounts and tranny mounts
how do you know when they are bad and need to be replace?
oh and how can you tell without taking out the engine or the tranny. i was told once if the motor moves to one side greatly while steeping on the gas motor mount is bad. but what about the tranny how can you tell... |

Re: motor mounts and tranny mounts
IMO, if they are not ripped, then they are good. If you are swapping engines then it would be good to change them being that everything is out. If your trans has a newer style mount at the back with a crossmember You could jack up on the tailshaft lightly to see if it seperates.
Also, during normal driving/accelerating you may have weird vibrations or clunking if they are torn.

Re: motor mounts and tranny mounts
Not sure how old many of you are but some can remeber the early sixties impalas, mine being a 62 ss, it had powerglide 327, well when the left motor mount went bad, engine torque would rotate the motor over to the right, smash the kickdown linkage to the floor..... wide open throttle til the torque leveled off it was one wild ride...anyways the left side motor mount is the critical one, all the newer cables have eliminated the wild ride syndrome...the right side is just along for the ride.

Re: motor mounts and tranny mounts
Thats sounds more like driveline inclination issues, have you shimmed the rear axle after you lowered it? Or universal issues...needs checking before use.

Re: motor mounts and tranny mounts
When you lowered your truck one thing that happens is the rear axle will rotate upwards, due to the way it is mounted on the trailing arms, to correct this you have to shim the axle housing/ trailings arms with about 2 to 4 degree shims to correct this, and or you have a universal joint going out, use a pry bar agaisnt the universal wedged inbetween them and try to move it, if it moves at all it needs to be replaced, it will usally be the rear only but sometimes it could be front and rear. If the unversal comes apart at freeway speeds all hell breaks loose....

Took it to the dealership and they wrapped a chain around the motor mount to hold it in place. Needless to say the old man wasn't impressed. |

Re: motor mounts and tranny mounts
Then start looking at everything else, even for loose or broken welds.

Here's an article on pinion angle that may prove helpful:

Re: motor mounts and tranny mounts
to check your motor mounts ; just get it running ,foot on th brake and put it in gear and give it a little throttle and if the mount lifts off, it needs a new one one. for the trans ,just lift up on the rear of the tranny and if the mount seperates it needs replacing. check your ujoints and centre brg an support if it has one. check to see whether or not that there is a broken centre bolt in either of the rear springs; the bolt which goes through the centre of the spring and the head of it resides in the spring perch; stops it from going forwards and backwards. tires need balancing or perhaps you may have a seperation or two in a tire or tires, all which will give you vibration. sometimes it is just the nut behind the wheel

Re: motor mounts and tranny mounts
well then perhaps something there doesn't line up properly which could also give you a problem. all points were just guidelines where problems can occur. perhaps if you got under your truck and checked a few things you might be able to find the problem. the internet isn't goig to fix it for you
