235 Engine Removal Question
Is it possible to pull out a straight 6 (235) without pulling the bell housing and tranny? My truck is a 1962 C20 if that makes a difference... The parking brake is the kind with the (leather?) strap around the drum.
It looks like I am going to have to unbolt the tranny and pull the block and bell housing together. Is there a better way? Thanks--This is surely in the manual but I haven't gotten it yet and I have searched the forums for a while and haven't found any conclusive threads... |

Yes you can pull just the engine if that's what you want to do. Personally I find it easier for reinstallation to have the bellhousing, flywheel and clutch installed onto the engine. For me it's easier to install the trans onto the bellhousing, than to try and get the engine lined up with the trans , bellhousing and clutch all at the same time.

UPDATE:
Following Captainfab (and my pops) advice we pulled the 4 bolts attaching the bell housing to the tranny. I believe the bolts were 3/4". Two are on top of the tranny and two are inside the bell. Once those were out we just raised the engine hoist until the front mount cleared the cross member and pulled forward to separate the bell from the tranny. I put a jack on the clutch assembly to help keep it off the rear cross member and level the motor as we slid it out of the tunnel. From then on it was pretty much a straight shot into the garage.... hope that helps... Unfortunately I discovered that the Exhaust manifold was fatally cracked and then the radiator guy called me back to tell me mine was not repairable unless I had $400... Otherwise motor looks pretty good...pics soon. Malibob - I'm fond of this motor too and am only pulling it to do a gasket/freeze plug/seal update and replace the throw out (release) bearing. Anyone got an exhaust manifold for sale? |

In case you do need to pull the bellhousing for some reason, the flywheel has to come off first. 4 of the bellhousing bolts are behind the flywheel.

Glad to hear you are keeping the 6. Too many of them are being scrapped in my opinion. They were good motors.

Thanks Ray...I did a bit of head scratching before I got the bell off. Looks like the throw out bearing is definitely shot. Clutch looks good.
Mali- This motor runs strong and smooth, at least it did before I pulled it out. Dad is waiting for the day I decide to put a 350 in it....it may be a while! |
