1962 C-10 w/ 235 - 1st Oil Change
I'm finally getting around to changing the oil in my '62 C-10 and it will be the first time. I've changed the oil countless times in other vehicles but never on one with the cartridge type oil filter. Do I drain the oil directly out of the canister? Or just let it run back down through the engine to drain?
After I refill the engine do I need to pour a separate quart directly into the canister with the new filter? Or do all 5 quarts go right into the engine? Engine is a 235 and I'm going with 10W-30 (which is just a guess on my part). Any and all advice is appreciated. Last edited by bloody hammer; 09-11-2010 at 12:21 PM. |

Never changed the oil in a 6 before but if it were me. I would just drain it from the plug. Then pour about 1/2 a quart in the canister before filling the motor.

On my 62 I use one pan to drain the engine oil into , after its drained I leave it there and put another on the ground to catch whatever comes out of the canister ... You will find the canister is not light in weight , hold the canister with one hand .. unbolt with the other .. The 10-12 inch long bolt will come out of the center .. Clean out canister , slide in new filter and reinenstall .. Check and keep canister centred and mock consintly and your tightning..
DO NOT ADD OIL TO CANISTER ... Put oil plug back in , tighten and fill crankcase with oil .. pull coil wire and cycle engine several times to pump oil thru system and to fill canister ... Reconnect and start , while running ck for leaks .. Sounds like alot and I probably drug it out .. Hope this helps .. For my older engine I run Dello 400 / Rotella 15-40 oil , recommened on / for diesel trucks but has superior lubricating propertys for our older engines .. P.S. mine takes more than 5 quarts .. After you remove the cover and filter element, use a suction pump to get any oil out of the housing that doesn't drain back into the engine. You want to make sure the filter housing is completely empty before you re-install the drain plug in the pan.
The 235 has a bypass filtering system. Oil goes straight from the pump to the bearings without going through the filter first. For this reason, you do not need to put any oil in the filter housing before starting the engine. Pour 5 quarts into the valve cover, start the engine, and let it run for a couple of minutes to fill the filter housing. Now check the oil level and add if necessary to bring it to the line on the stick. Ray Last edited by raycow; 09-12-2010 at 07:06 PM. |

don't forget to change the gskt in the filter base. it should come with the filter cartridge. new gskt on the drain plug doesn't hurt either
