Confused... Inline 6 ?'s
Ok I have a massive exhaust leak between my intake and exhaust... do they actually mate together and why? There is black soot all over the area around where they come together and I can visually see the gasket missing. Here is the replacement gasket I found.
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...3929&ppt=C0026 The problem is I can only find 1 bolt, the middle one on the outside. There aren't anymore! I found holes 2 holes in the intake but there is nothing except a bump in the exhaust manifold on the front and back one... It this my nightmare... Someone broke them off in there? |

Re: Confused... Inline 6 ?'s
either broke off, or were forgotten to be put back in or they maybe wormed their way out.

Re: Confused... Inline 6 ?'s
I have never been able to do it other than pulling both the intake and exhaust off, then replace all the gaskets, then both them back on again. Not real hard. To me the hardest part was always the doughnut flange for the exhaust pipe. It always gave me fits. Everything else was super smooth. I have not even had to readjust the carb either.

Re: Confused... Inline 6 ?'s
Pull the intake and exhaust manifolds and clean things up. There is a heat riser passage that allows exhaust gas to circulate up around the intake around the carb base if the bi-metal heat riser is working. this carbons up and needs cleaned out. the heat riser also rusts up and will stick open , closed or somewhere in the middle.
There should be three bolts connecting the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold., Sounds like you may have some missing or broken hardware. The intake manifold can be changed to a clifford or offenhauser intake, but they should have hot water jacket cast into the bottom especially if headers are also installed . The inline six can be cold blooded with out the two manifolds working together, But the reverse can also happen. the fuel can boil out of the carb in extreme heat of summer. P.S> the gasket is there to prevent the exhaust leak that you have now good luck The gasket shown in your first post is the correct one. But if you get the intake/Exhaust block gasket kit , It comes with a new base gasket and a exhaust doughnut plus a solid gasket for LPG applications(between the two manifolds)

Just have to buy a length of threaded rod and cut to lengths required.

Re: Confused... Inline 6 ?'s
I had some exhaust manifold studs for 2.5/4.0 jeeps in my tool box left over so I used them, they have locking nuts to keeps them from backing out. These worked good for my application with headers I just installed. if you are using stock manifold you will need a couple long studs or just use the 2 long bolts.

Now my next issue is should I drill and tap the exhaust manifold holes? The intake to exhaust bolts on the inside were broken off from someones previous repair attemp... or should I try and track down another manifold? Ideas? Last edited by Sixxer; 10-12-2010 at 08:49 PM. |

Re: Confused... Inline 6 ?'s
I like the idea of drilling and tapping so you can use studs instead of bolts. If you assemble the manifold with brass nuts instead of steel you shouldn't have any problem the next time you need to need to take it apart. This used to be standard practice on old engines, but you don't see it any more.

Re: Confused... Inline 6 ?'s
I don't have a big leak there but it's starting. So I went to the local JY and got another exhuast mani since I had replaced the donut a couple years ago and knew the studs to the exhuast pipe were "IFFY".The one I got has broken stud(or did have) I drilled them out and picked up a tap but haven't redone it yet.I picked the studs up in the "HELP" section of the LPS.I wanted to be able to tear it down and put it back together instead of having it down while I fixed/found stuff.neither of them has a working heat riser,so I need to adress that also.I had cleaned up and done a spray bomb cleanup on the engine bay and wanted to paint the mani with VHT while I was doing this.
