Air cleaner

Found a used oil bath for the Apache brought it home and man it was filled with some nasty crap.So I got to thinking (my weakness) has any body converted it to a dry filter.I was thinking of trying to find a fram filter that will slip in side the stock AC housing surely some one else has fabed something up.What are you all using

Re: Air cleaner

Not specific for this filter but I've seen and heard of guys converting the oil to dry filter. Don't see any reason why you can't.

Re: Air cleaner

Re: Air cleaner

Oil bath air filters are a bit messy, but they are the best at cleaning air. The theory is: The air must make a 180 degree turn and any sediment (dirt) will be too heavy to make the turn and the oil is at the bottom to catch this dirt. The air making the turn also causes a misting of the oil, which impregnates the mesh allowing further filtration. If the mesh gets too oily, it just gravity drips back into the oil sump, bringing the dirt with it. Works good and just looks cool!

Re: Air cleaner

I wouldn't be so sure that they filter better than a good quality paper filter. We used to only get about 50,000 miles or less on engines with oil bath filters on the norm before they needed a ring job. 100K miles on an engine without a rebuild sometimes meant you got your photo in the local paper Now that is a low mileage used rig.

A guy would have to find a filter that would fit right before cutting the innards out of an oil bath filter but it shouldn't be that hard. It might be a filter for an industrial engine though.

Re: Air cleaner

My filter mesh type just pulls right out from the outer housing, then I thought about a paper filter to replace this I measured it today and I'll try and quiz my auto parts man this week.

Re: Air cleaner

i cut mine up and fit i think a 4in tall filter in it. it made my pickup leaner than crap. the only way it would run decent is with the choke half way on. then i installed a electric supercharger(O YA!!!) and covered most of the filter with ducktape and it ran ALOT better. then i took the supercharger off and left the tape and it runs decient with about a 3in hole for air to get in. BTW its a 55 3200 with the 235 and 4 speed.
P.S. ive been looking for a thread for installin a 72 350 with a 67 4 speed in my 55. its my daily driver for about 30 miles a day at roughly 10mpg and a quart of oil per day(long story i didnt do it) if anyone has one let me know please
