Folks! What headers would you buy?
Hi,
I am looking for a pair of headers for my 65 C10 Stepside. It has a 350 engine out of a C10 from 1980. As I need to wait until the German winter is gone which is about 5 month more from now on it's time to improve the truck for next season. Current plan is to get me a pair of headers and getting rid off the old stock ones.My engine has been modified in the USA so its already bored, it has 030 pistons and some Edelbrock stuff like manifold and carb. Considering this do you think it is possible to get even more power from headers and how much? I am not sure and people telling different things. There are freaks for the cast manifolds and others love the tuning headers. Hope to get some more opinions and suggestions here. Andy Andy |

Have you ever heard from Sanderson Headers? They say their technology using an extra thick flange works even without any gasket. Has anybody experience in that?

Good stuff man. LQQKs very nice! Do think they'll fit into the Truck? Because it looks quite tight in your picture. I think these are short ones, aren't they? Would you prefer full length headers for the Truck?

Re: Folks! What headers would you buy?
Andy, just my opinion, of course.
1. if you just really WANT headers, then Lakeroadster makes excellent points about quality AND cost. 2. if you're going to race occasionally, then being able to run the headers open will be a benefit, probably, power-wise. 3. if you're NEVER going to un-cap the headers then the "benefits" power-wise, are open to debate and certainly highly dependant on the rest of the system. For instance, IMO, your truck with, say, a 2.5 inch system (from the manifolds or the header outlets), with an X pipe and decent flowing mufflers, wont show noticeble, seat-of-the-pants, daily-driving, power differences between headers and 2.5 in. rams-horn manifolds. Lots of guys will argue otherwise, and it certainly will depend on the systems being compared. 4. the "coolness" factor. unarguably, it is neat to say "I've got headers", especially if they're high-dollar. They are not cool when it comes to heat, releasing more under-the-hood heat than cast manifolds. Wants versus Needs, you want 'em, I say, get 'em. I'd like the Doug Thorley tri-Y's myself but will stick with my 2.5 inch corvette-style rams horns (which can now be purchased for about $80 apiece, non-OEM of course).

Re: Folks! What headers would you buy?
I picked up a set of Hedman Elites for my engine. It is a BB but you can see it has a pretty nice finish. How this finish is going to hold up with the heat is yet to be seen. I think I paid about $360 for the headers. I am very happy with the quality also.

Re: Folks! What headers would you buy?
One difference between the Hookers (which I have) and the Hedman's is the pipe sizes.
Hookers have 1 5/8" primaries with 2.5" collectors. Hedman have 1.5" primaries with 3" collectors. I don't know what the advantage to either is but it may matter to some. |

Re: Folks! What headers would you buy?
That was one thing that I liked about the Hookers is the 2.5" collector as opposed the more commonly used 3"; I felt that the smaller collector would create a better scavenging affect and produce more low end torque (even though I doubt anybody could really tell the difference).
I have had my Hookers on for nearly 15 years and will probably look at replacing them, with the Hedmans, (for the previously mentioned clutch linkage clearance) depending on what kind of condition they turn out to be after bead blasting. |

Re: Folks! What headers would you buy?
Hi,it's no manual shifter it's equipped with a standard TH350 automatic transmission. Makes it any difference?
By the way: Would you prefer full length headers or shorty ones? |
