Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
I'm tired of seeing people only using 350's 355's and 383's for there racing builds. I have had my share of 350's and 383's I still have a few actually I love them but what happened to all the classic performance small blocks like the 327 and 302 even a 283? I know they were high revers and some had factory forged cranks. I just picked up a 327 and plan on racing it this spring/summer I just hope im not the only one....

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
The phrase no replacement for displacement has alot to do with it but also bigger motors build more torque and that is really what you need for a heavy truck. I am with you though because I love the idea of a high winding small block in my truck but not practical for me.

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
Most of it is because the current racing world is all about BIG CID's
Being that most of our trucks scale out @ 3500-4100lbs and street driven. It takes a good head and a custom grind cam profile that's been researched on a simulator to make work nicely over 7k. A nice low slip converter helps out also. physics also point out that High Rpm motors normally work best in light vehicle and a steep gear. Just my 2C

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
torque = acceleration,,
cubic inches = short route to torque to do it with small cubic inches starts to = cubic dollars in comparison. There are plenty of comp eliminator motors out there making 1100 and 1500HP with less than 300"s. But to do it will get into the pocketbook around $30k to $40k and maintenance every race is dang near what we spend on a complete motor! There's an old saying a wise old engine builder taught me a long time ago... 500HP at 5000rpm is a hell of a lot easier on the assembly and budget than 500HP at 9000rpm. 283's 302's 327's there great little motors. But when you can build a RELIABLE 650HP 434 n/a SBC for around $6500-$7500,, why would you race with anything less in a SBC?

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
I agree with the small motor thing being cooler because I thought the same thing but im not going to destroke a bigger motor just to gain some rpms and cool factor but my truck is driven. If I was racing it then a tall gear 4.88-5.13 for the 8 th mile and a loose concertos than yes. And I too have seen some pretty impressive mouse motors like a 66 chevelle tube chassis car with no thrills but a 283 w/14.5-1 comp full roller vt afr heads and hillborne injection on alcohol was one of them. It made 700+ hp @ 7600. Here's how I look at it build what you want and show us pictures and it will be cool.

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
In todays world a 350 is tiny. 600 inch tall deck bbc's are becoming common place. Money spent vs horsepower/torque made a 350 will win any day of the week over a smaller engine. Apples to apples of course.

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
Back in 1991- I had a 327 with forged flat-tops, comp 280 cam and camel hump heads. With a 125 shot of N2O and 3.73s in a Vega, it went 14.80s. Built a 383 in 1992 with forged flat tops, same comp cam, same heads, same 125 shot, in the same car went 12.44 blistering the tires till the 330 mark. It cost about $200.00 more to build than the 327. I dropped more than 2 seconds for $200.00. Now I have a 406, full roller motor, with 250 shot in a 1971 240z and it goes 10.60s on slicks. For drag racing you just can beat cubic inches if you can get the heads and exhaust to flow....

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
i understand completely. i know cubes=power. i just wanted to see if anybody was running a 327 or small sbc. i'm putting this 327 in my nova just for the main reason its not a 383 or 350. i have a 383 in there now which is awsome and runs well but i want to do something old skool and different.

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
Just buy some 327 emblems Old school vibe New school power.
Plus emblems are much cheaper than building another motor.

I'm getting ready to drop a 325(5.3L LS motor) in my 76 C10 tomorrow. I'm hoping it'll get me to low 12's on motor.

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
My truck has a 307, its nothing special but next year im hoping to give it some more power. I was talking to a guy that had a 307 in his camaro that was pretty healthy and he had nothing but good to say about it. I know bigger motor=more power but i hate when kids think that anything under a 350 is slow or just because you have a bigger motor its faster...

i loved hearing the pro-stock trucks run with their ultra high winder 358s. local guy has a killer 327 that he turns 9K in his chevyII. it's a manual to boot so it sounds purdy gnarly runnin down the track

Re: Anybody a running a sbc smaller than a 350?
I"m running a 327 10-1 pop up pistons, vortec heads with comp beehive springs, Comp 280/480 cam, performer intake Qjet HEI and headers. It is backed with a Tremec TKO 600 with 3.43 posi in the rear. I really love winding the gears. To come away from a light I have to rev to 1000 - 1200 to get her to go. It gets 15 mpg with AC and definetly 375 hp.
I am building a 496 bbc for replacement of the small displacement. Anyone interested in a slightly used 327?
