Any DIY framecleaners or sandblaster?

I am starting to tear down the old girl and I see there is tons of greese, mud, paint even some tar. I am curious if there are any DIYers on here that have cleaned and media/sand blasted their own frames.

What type of blaster did you use?

Media or sand?

Is it worth Doing It Yourself or is it worth dishing out the cash to have a pro do it?

Any info on this would be great! Thanks guys.

A couple of weeks and alot of work. You can drop the frame off at a powder coater and $300 to $400 dollars and a couple of days you will be done! I did it the hard way and would spend the money next time so I could work on another part of the project.

I sand blasted my own. Took about 10 hours, about 8 bags of sand (if I remember correctly) with this sand blaster you see below. A good compressor is a must.....

I tried using sand but I found that it didn't have the balls to get tar and grease off. I just used a wire wheel and then sandblaster afterwards to get deep into the rust.

Thanks guys... Hopefully I can get her broken down enough this weekend to start the process.

I was at the World Of Wheels car show this weekend and a local guy had a booth, he said he would media blast, sand blast and powder coat it for $600.

For real nasty stuff, I use a garden sprayer and some diesel/kero. Spray it on, let it soak in a bit and use a putty knife. Repeat as needed until the heavy stuff is gone. Scrape it onto a big piece of cardboard that gets tossed into the garbage.

Once the heavy stuff is gone, then use cheap oven cleaner to remove the rest.

Elbow grease, putty knife, wire wheel, wipe down with mineral spirits. It's a messy, time consuming job.

I used a sandblaster simliar to the picture seen above, and it worked GREAT, used 3 bags of sand to do half the frame, and it was NASTY. Of course, I live in the desert, and I can just sweep it into the yard...

I'm pretty stubborn and do it myself regardless of price to pay a professional.

My method is to go real heavy with dollar store oven cleaner followed by a trip to the car wash. Then, sandblast with a pressure pot blaster like pictures in the post above.

i just completed the whole front suspension/cradle from a 74 to replace mine i used Purple Power from Oriellys/Walmart the later being $6 more for 2 1/2 gal. jug. i used a putty knife to scrape off as much as I could then pour some PP in a container big enough to dip a wheel brush in and scrub wash it, keep it wet & when the heaviest crap is off switch to course scouring pads when all is done i washed with Dawn soap & water,rinse & let dry . then with a scouring pad GLOVES and lacquer thinner find the residual grease spots i scrubbed again till clean. after drying i applied Ospho phosphoric acid with a brush according to instructions but NOTE that this company did not recommend rinsing afterward and i posted this question at http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=442974 the acid did a fantastic job eating the rust. my next phase is to shoot a primer but its been to cold here and will do a sample today to see how my primer does. i talked to a company rep & his reply was the acid coating left unrinsed is an etched coating & a self etching primer will adhere to it without lifting & thinking about it i'll also test with an epoxy primer that i think now is the best route.

if you sandblast yourself i wouldnt re-use the media as it is contaminated with grease and after all that work & money if your local sandblaster is resonable that would be the way imo

Def dont reuse the sand- not only is it contaminated, but the stuff I used was 5 bucks for 50 pounds at home depot

I used Awesome Orange from Napa, And a pressure washer. But I like the
idea of the oven cleaner. Then used a pot like the one shown earlier.
What wasn't covered in grease, Was pitted to hel1. If I found more grease
while blasting, I would hit it with a putty knife. Then continue blasting.
Once I got done, Hit the pitted areas with phoscoat, Then a rust inhibiting
primer over everything before painting.

Doing it yourself! = Priceless!

And I reused the sand while doing the frame. I would sift it threw a screen.
