Johnny Ca$h Cowboy Cadillac
Well . . . I went and did it. Bought a 1961 Chevy short stepside 4x4. The Vin indicates a C long bed stepside instead of K short stepside. The PO must have put this together one piece at a time. The hood is like a '62 with no eyebrows and a clear turn signal lights. The emblems on the front fenders is like the 1963 type (bowtie under 10). The emblems on the cowl side are like the 1962 (bowtie beside 10). The interior dash definately looks to be 1961 with eyebrows. The chassis is a 4wd without coils, year unknown. When I look at the pumpkins front and rear the front lookl like a DANA 44 and the rear looks like a chevy 12 bolt. All wheels have 6 lugs. The engine is a V-8 maybe 283 as it has no side motor mounts, only the front with a manual 4speed with the granny first and divorced transfer case. as it has no side motor mounts only the front. My question is were the 4wd units posi front and rear?
Sorry so long. |

Re: Johnny Ca$h Cowboy Cadillac
where is the eng mounted at the frt? then there must be mounting on either side of the b/housing
most of them had no posi at all. there would have been a rear axle posi option, but I doubt a frt one 4 wd of this vintage didn't have coils , just semi-elliptic frt and rear. chevy also had the ser # stamped in the frame(top) by the strg box sounds like you bought a box of parts assembled ron |

Re: Johnny Ca$h Cowboy Cadillac
I agree with padresag on the engine. Heads have acc bolt holes so they would be late 60's-70's.

Re: Johnny Ca$h Cowboy Cadillac
Yes the front differential is a closed knuckle Dana 44. The front motor mount would be consistent with a '60-'62 4x4. You have a hydraulic clutch as the '60-'62's had. The radiator is the '60-'62 style. It is impossible to tell from that pic, what size the engine is other than it is a small block. You'll have to get either casting numbers or the suffix code from the front passenger side of the block....behind the alternator.
It is not uncommon to find these trucks that have been assembled from several different trucks. Some guys are just better than others at making them look like they aren't pieced together.

Re: Johnny Ca$h Cowboy Cadillac
Thanks for all the info. This site is great. As soon as some of the snow melts i'll get some of those codes. We just had 16-18 inches of blizzard snow and now two more inches. Bad thing is that the daughter's Pontiac (low to the ground) is parked in front of the 4x4 so more snow digging before playing.
