Lock ring/split rim question
My 66 GMC has the original lock ring style wheels. My spare is also a lock ring style but it has a one piece outer ring ( not the split ring). I assume this is an older style. Does anyone know what year they changed to the split ring? Here are a couple of pictures.

Re: Lock ring/split rim question
My 61 has the split ring style rim I know they came with the truck new. With the ring being solid, how do you remove it to change the tire. I don't know when they changed style though.

Re: Lock ring/split rim question
It depended on what company manufactured the rim. Heavy duty rims were a shelf item on trucks. Goodyear, Firestone and Budd all made wheels for large trucks. The 16" rim on my avatar and the photo of the GMC hubcap on rim, was made by Goodyear ( check side of ring you will see GYR 16 ) and has the split ring. Other companys who also manufactued these rims such as Firestone and Budd left the ring solid.

Re: Lock ring/split rim question
as far as changing these tires.... You are better off to upgrade to a newer rim.. people that dont change tires on rims like this are better off to take it to a place that does big truck tires.. I have changed them by hand , you have to get the tire away from the lock ring then force the ring off the rim by prying ... the tricky part is making sure the rim/ring has not rusted so bad that they wont want to lockup properly ...and you always cage or chain a rim like this when airing it up ,many a person have been killed/injured by rims that give out.....after you try to dismount one you will more than likely go to a tire store (one that handles truck tires) and watch them do it in no time at all.... the solid ring just gets pryed off once the tire is away from the ring.. it will slide one way because the groove in the rim is bigger than the ring...been years since i have done this , my last 65 1 ton had both type rims on it ...

Re: Lock ring/split rim question
if you can just drive over the edge of the tire to break the bead of the tire( the tire is off and laying on the ground). knock the ring loose and then pry it off the rim. pull the tire off and remove the tube. you have to break the bead on the backside to
