Question Buying a 70 Jimmy!!!!!

Hey fellas, I'm buying a 1970 GMC Jimmy 4WD. the truck doesn't have an engine but I have a motor already. Do you guys know what tranny and t-case it will have?? It is an automatic. The truck is 6 hours away and I have only seen pictures. What kind of axles are under it?? Dana 44 and 12 bolt????

Any advice would be great fellas. Thanks in advance. I already have an 81 and 79 K5 but this is my first Jimmy.

Re: Buying a 70 Jimmy!!!!!

Yup, whatmcm says. A th350 tranny, np205 t-case. If you dont have a motor in it anyway, I would drop in a 700r4 from the late 80's (88-89). You would have to move your motor mounts foward about 1.5 inches for everything to bolt in. I think you would have to swap the tail output shaft to bolt up to the np205. That is something I plan on doing in the next couple of years. Need more mpg's. Hope this helps.

Re: Buying a 70 Jimmy!!!!!

unless you like bodywork buy a clean truck. rockers, bed, floor by the kick pannels, and the subfloor under the front seats is the worst spots. Point it out and pay less!!! say things like "aww man i thought this thing just needed a motor" or tell him u want it for partsand this and this are rusty. then drop the price!!! dont just buy one cause u want one.very nice ones come up for sale all the time for less than u can build them. and if the windshield frame as rotten dont do it

I agree with mustard. Don't let the excitement of a new purchase cloud your better judgement. That being said, good luck. Make sure you let us know/ post pics.

Mustard....you only say that cause you got a smokin' deal on your Jimmy

Depending on the price you pay without a motor and pending how good the body really is, there are some great deals around. It all depends on how much cash you have on hand and how much work you're willing to do though.

Good luck with the buy and make sure you get some pics up.

And it just goes to show there are good deals out there! Some of the "techniques" i used was tellling him the tires were bald on the outer edges and the whole front end needed to be rebuilt. And i searched for rust and i found some small holes. It wasnt for sale. He had peolple calling dibbs on it and he knew how to get ahold of them. I told him id give him 2000 for it if it fired with jumpers. It hadnt run in 6 months. It fired right up. He said he had to call the guy with first dibbs though so i offered him 100 not too. He said if i want it that bad i can have it for 2000

All that was wrong with the front end was the steering box bolts were loose

Ever since i got ripped off on my first car ive never paid too much for a vehicle.

Other peoples stuff is only worth what your willing to pay for it. Dont even look at the price the seller puts on it. Get a maximum price you want to pay for in your head. Start low and dont go above the price YOU want to pay. Dont spend your whole build budget on a truck that needs to get towed and comes with boxes of parts.

Shop around. Use the forum. Pay what you want. If you find a smoking deal jump on it!!!

Re: Buying a 70 Jimmy!!!!!

hahaha nice. Yeah, I've gotten a few good deals like that where the owner thought the engine was toast and turned out to be the carb was gummed up.

There are some great deals around and if you know how to wheel and deal you'll always get what you want.
