65 Price Question
I have found a prospective truck locally, and was turning to you guys for advice an approximate value.
1965 C-10 Long Step Side Straight six 3 speed All original minus replaced seat Condition Minor surface rust throughout Small patches where it is rusted through Bed rotting but intact Engines runs but leaking oil Transmission leaking No water or coolant (unknown if from leak radiator cap is still moist) Been sitting in garage for approximately 6 years Overall in fair condition for age. Clear title, registration and inspection expired 2005. Truck is marked 3,900 but the owner is a friend of mine and said make him an offer. The price on this truck is higher than others I've looked at but I've been looking at 67-72 trucks in worse shape. So I figured I would come to you folks to get an idea of a fair price for both us. Re: 65 Price Question
drag out a hose or bring a couple of jugs and fill the radiator and see if it leaks.
without pictures we can't really tell you anything, but it sounds high to me. Rust on bumpers wouldn't concern me, they're pretty thick metal. Rust on the sheetmetal on the other hand...well take what you see and double it for a good guesstimate.

Re: 65 Price Question
Is it a big back window custom cab or a small back window base model.
Either way the $3,900 is very high, IMO. If it is a small back window base model it sounds like a $1,500 max. truck based on your description. If it has a big back window, custom cab, air conditioning, or some other rare options it's worth more than the $1,500. But I am betting if it is a 6 cylinder it probably isn't to highly optioned. Are the rocker panels and floors solid close to the kick panel and door sill? Take an ice pick or a scratch awl and see if you can push it through anywhere, also look underneath the truck at the cab mount structural supports, the mounts at the front frame corners for the radiator support and look at where the inner fenders attach to the cab. and to the radiator support. Also look at the cab corners. I own the same basic truck, I love the 60-66's, but bottom line is as far as the "masses" are concerned they just aren't worth as much as the 67-72's. Good luck... post some photos if you can. Last edited by lakeroadster; 03-18-2011 at 06:14 PM. |

Re: 65 Price Question
I agree with the other guys, not running -$1k, possible mechanical issues -$1k, not licensed and inspected -500., $1500 tops is what i would offer, just cuz he is a friend...

Re: 65 Price Question
There could be more rust issues than what you're seeing. Crawl underneath and carefully inspect the floorboards, cab corners, cab supports and rocker panels. Rusty fenders are relatively inexpensive to fix/replace compared to a cab that is rusted out the bottom. Unless you're a guy with welding/fabrication skills, installing patch panels can be a very expensive proposition.
$3900.00 for a 60-66 truck needing the work you describe is way high IMHO. |

Re: 65 Price Question
This is the only picture I have so far, a crappy cell picture but I'll try to get more.
The only places (that I have found) that are rusted through are the bottom of the fenders and the one door everything else seems to be in good shape no rust or dents. Posted via Mobile Device Last edited by carney; 03-18-2011 at 07:52 PM. Reason: image moved |

Re: 65 Price Question
Not trying to be rude, just asking.....
Is it just me or does it look like a long bed in the photo? Only reason I ask is the long bed step sides are not very sought after....which makes it worth even less. IMO Last edited by lakeroadster; 03-18-2011 at 06:47 PM. |

Re: 65 Price Question
It looks like a long stepper to me also, If you gotta have it, I would say $1k now. You can change the stepper bed to a fleet if you want but dont tell your friend that.

Re: 65 Price Question
Unless you have a bad case of "See Want Need Have" I see it I want it I gotta gotta have it. Keep looking or lowball him. You may get it for a reasonable price, 3900 just seems way to high to me. But, if you got a soft spot for it, then get it.

Re: 65 Price Question
Well I finally got off work and got to go take a closer look, its a little rougher then I originally expected and it is a long bed (forgive me I'm a child of the 80's I saw step side and assumed short bed).
Anyways I took my camera and took plenty of pictures I'll let them do the talking. Here's the whole album http://s165.photobucket.com/albums/u...Chevy%20Truck/ Here's some highlights (low lights might be more accurate) Also I'm not a very good salesman so any help on how to convince him that his truck's not worth what he wants is greatly appreciated. |

Re: 65 Price Question
like I mentioned, what you see in rust there's more. Under those door sill plates I'm betting that it's rotted out. You can see some of the rot on the rockers. I'm willing to bet the footwells and floorpan are rotted out too. Not running currently and unknown condition of the radiator. The body is decent, I'll give it that, but it's not worth more than $1500 IMHO
He's smoking crack if he wants $4K for it. <eta> friend or not, you're going to probably just piss him off or offend him if you make an offer of $1K to $1500 for it (which is honestly about all that it's worth) if he's wanting $3K more of it. Probably better to walk away for the sake of your friendship

Walk away my freind.... Just walk away.
I'm also guessing under the tank is rusted as well as the tank.

Re: 65 Price Question
Since it is a long bed I wouldn't make an offer. But IMO top dollar for this truck is $1,500. It is pretty solid from what I see in the photos. If that truck was sitting up in the midwest it would sell pretty quick, at $1,500, not $3,900.
If he would fix the blown head gasket and get it running and clean it up, $2,000. Again, the long bed with a step side is the thing holding it back from being worth moe $$$. |

Re: 65 Price Question
unless you're a freak like me. I paid $1800 for my truck with a body in slightly worse conditions but a good running engine.

Re: 65 Price Question
Some of this decision depends on what you want to do to this truck and also what you can do. Rust is all the usual places so to me it's just about expected. But also it's how bad you want it and what else is available if not this. Good to have a project though...

Re: 65 Price Question
I passed on it, I've been looking on craigslist for a while but haven't found anything, everything seems really high priced.
I did find this running truck locally they were asking $750 but it sold before I had a chance Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 65 Price Question
I would say a 1000 would be generous. I just passed on a 61 big window short fleet running with an original spotlight for 1200 and the bed was perfect. I just did not have room but it was a craigslist find, there out there , just widen your search area.
