Exhaust pipe question
I'd like more growl out of my exhaust. My current setup is 2.25" pipe from the headers to Flowmaster 40's to the tips behind the rear tires. I do not plan to shorten the system but want to make it a little louder. Has anybody ran 2.5" pipe to the mufflers and then 3" pipe to the tips??? I was thinking 3" pipe AFTER the mufflers would not hurt performance. Is this true or not? Thanks

Re: Exhaust pipe question
Is it ran all the way back, or to in front of the real tires? I dont know that it will be substancially louder if you just changed to a 3 inch pipe from the mufflers back, but still ran it all the way to the back bumper. i would try switching to a different muffler, and maybe having it exit right in front of the rear tires. If you stayed with flowmasters, I would put on either a 30 series 2 chanber, or if you want it reall loud a 10 series single chamber. You could also switch to some glasspacks such as Cherry Bombs, and it would definately be louder depending on how long of glasspacks you installed. It would have a different sound that your flows do now though. I know when I had to redo my exhaust due to installing my 4 link and bags, mine got much louder. It used to exit in the back, but now it dumps down about a foot behind the the back of the cab wall. It was my only option without making some funky bends in the pipe, and there is not a way to run it all the way back like it was before. I kept the same mufflers, just ran 2.5 inch tubing from each header. Im running borolas btw. befoer it had a nice tone, but now you can actually hear the cam.

Re: Exhaust pipe question
I have no intentions to shorten the exhaust even though that's the easiest way to make it louder. I like it behind the rear tires so I can open the garage door and back out enough to let my exhaust out without pulling the entire truck out.

Re: Exhaust pipe question
Ok, you are far enough foward If you want to hear it, I dont think you need bigger than the 2 1/4" pipe, but cut the tail pipes off& poke em out the side just ahead of the wheels . If you add a 3"x 16 or 18" long crhome can at the end, my bet is that you will hear it I ran a mild 355 a few seasons in my longhorn.Headers, 2 1/4 pipe/H pipe & turned out ahead of the wheels. The 3" "cans" really add to the sound. On the tail pipes, think of it like this....the more bends you put in them the more it reduces the sound. You could run 2 1/2" pipe.....but IMHO, I dont think you really need to I think a set of short tail pipes, with big cans will wake it up....crazyL

Re: Exhaust pipe question
If you're runnin' 40 series mufflers... you can't get much louder than that.
I have 3" exhaust from the headers into 3" 40 series, and 3" pipe that dumps out in front of the rear wheels. It sets off car alarms in parking lots. Gary

Re: Exhaust pipe question
crazy L, I have 3"x16" tips on it now. I love the 2.5" sound with the pipes exiting in front of the tires but I want that same sound "behind" the tires and I'm thinking my original post maybe the way to get it. I just hate to spend the dough and be disappointed.

Re: Exhaust pipe question
Just remember, that its all the bends(up over the arms, over the axle ,ect. that make the pipes quiet. The straighter & shorter you make the pipes, the more noise they will make. If you could run the pipes straight under the axle(doubt you can on a coil truck), but then just turn em behind the wheels, then you probably will like it The system we talked about had an awsome sound on my old truck , with a 355(you should have heard it with the 461 Olds tho.....!) best of fun, crazyL

Re: Exhaust pipe question
I know it's the bends on my long bed quieting it down but I'm determined to give it a little more rumble. Thanks again.

Re: Exhaust pipe question
I did try that 1 time....2 1/4" system all the way to the back(exit under the bumper, with a set of 3x16 cans). I liked it, it sounded like the corks were open @ the back bumper! It didnt last long tho, I didnt figure that Barney would like it too good crazyL

Re: Exhaust pipe question
I agree that if you want louder you could swap to the single chamber flowmaster or cherry bomb muffler (not the glasspack, the single chamber similar to flowmaster).

Re: Exhaust pipe question
This is definitely my cheapest option! I'll probably buy two single chamber mufflers and try them before redoing the pipe size.

Re: Exhaust pipe question
What about using cutouts? That'd give you the loud rumble you might be looking for, and the ability to quite it down/leave the full length pipes in place.
Just a thought.

Re: Exhaust pipe question
I ran 40-series on my truck, with 2.5-inch pipes from the collector to the inlet, then 2.25 from the outlet....in front of each rear tire. No balance tube, no X-pipe. Any time that I doubted how loud it was, I'd drive beside the barriers on the freeway and let the sound echo off of that concrete into my open windows. All doubt went away.
