does a '49 3800 have an oil filter???
sounds like a dumb question right???
I don't know if the motor is original.... I think most trucks in '49 came with a babbit bearing 216..... but this one appears to have a 235 stovebolt six..... from what I can tell the casting numbers say its a '55 235.... but I'm not sure at all does it have an oil filter???? if it does where is it at??? anybody know a part number??? also... should I go with non-detergent oil in a vehicle this old??? here is a pic if it helps...

Filters on those would be a bypass type. It mounts to the side of the intake manifold with U bolts like a muffler clamp. Usually orange/red. They are a toilet paper roll type and go inside the canister. You'll have two hoses coming from the side of the block that run it. It was an option and it doesn't look like you have one.
As for detergent vs non...depends on what has been run up to this point. My old '54 had non-detergent so I never changed from that. My 8N tractor was run with non-detergent but I didn't bother because I had 10w40 so I used it. I knew I could rebuild it cheap enough if anything went wrong. I'm sure there are opinions on it but I figured if it started to smoke because I cleaned it out with the detergent type, I'd change it! |

Your engine is a full pressure 235 from 54 or later. You can tell by the bolts that hold the valve cover, later 235's have them around the outside and Babbit 216's and early babbit 235's have two bolts that come up through the middle of the valve cover to hold it down.

The filters on these were dealer installed or aftermarket. Yours does not have one. They keep the oil much cleaner. They are available on the used market real cheap. Always get new hoses when you put one on.
