Engine temp??
Hey guys my truck runs at about 210 degrees. Is that a normsl temp or is it too hot. For a while i ran it with no tstat and it was steady at about 180f. I had heard that running it with no tstat would cause sludge to build up. So i put a 180 tstat and now runs at 210f. Im not too comfterable with it at that temp. Any ideas or suggestions? 350/ powerglide combo

Yes, you need some kind of restriction in the cooling system. I would try a 190 stat, and see if it cools down. I know it sounds backwards, but that is the way it works. If you still have issues, try summit or jegs and see if you can find a restrictor disc. I had a jeep with a 304 that would not run cool with a stat. The disc made it run at 220 constantly. BTW, I dont consider 210 hot if it stays there.

I would say it's a little high but not bad. Have you checked other stuff like fan shroud, clutch, radiator leaks, and so forth?? Also is that at idle or when you're driving?

I got a 350 outta a 72 camaro, original 4speed. had a 185 thermostat in it and ran at 210 also, i thought this was high and switched to 165 to try an lower it and it made little to no difference... I dontn worry about it, dont think its too high

some say its too high some say its good???? does it depend on region?
temp drops a bit while driving but maintains prety close to 210 most of the time.fan shroud is good and fan is a 4 blade original style with no clutch. maybe i should change tstat to a 190 o 195 and get a flex fan. what do u think???? thanks for replies

180 Degree Thermostat is what you need.
Is the Thermostat froze? 210 Degrees is to hard on the motor and it will run hot. Probably running rough with it being that hot. If thermostat is ok check the water pump to see if it is flowing good. Check for water leaks too. Fan cooling properly? i got steered away from flex fans on here so im sure you will here the same, i would agree on a 190 tstat. mine runs about 190-195 and im missing part of the radiator shroud

210 seems high to me, it should be running around 180-190 maybe 200 on a hot day in stop and go traffic. The restriction in the cooling system keeps the hot coolant in the radiator longer so it can be cooled by the fresh air coming through it.

yeah go with a 190 or 195, and run a overflow tank, look at a shrowd and check out your fan.

Make sure you have a good rad cap. Also, make sure the lower hose still has the spring in it so it wont get sucked flat. That will cause a flow restriction.

Where is the temperature sensor located at on the engine? It makes a big difference in the fluctuations of the reading you get.
On my '65 C10 (350 CBC) it is in the drivers side head. The temperature rises to about 210 before the thermostat opens, then the temp drops to about 180 - 190. (Running a standard GM type fan) On my Model A (also running a 350 SBC) it has a mechanical gauge screwed into the water pump, and an electronic gauge in the drivers side head. The mechanical gauge in the water pump never reads over 180 (with a 180 thermostat) the one in the head does just like my C10... up to 210, then down to 180 - 190 when the thermostat opens. Cap is good n lowe hose has spring. The temp sensor is on tstat housing and there is no leaks

and the winner is.......... tstat!!! so far. so i went to remove the tstat
and come to figure it is a 195F and not a 180F like i wanted when i first purchased it (should of checked). so i swaped in a 180F and the temp has maintained at 180-195 range witch im way more comfterable with than the 210F that it used to run. So i guess i will call this one problem SOLVED thank you all for the input

Glad it was an easy fix.
My advice was gonna be to pull the t-stat and put it in a pan of water on the stove. heat it til it opened and use a candy thermometer to check the temp at which it opened. But it sounds like you have it going on now.

yeah to day i drove it around for 20-25 min and let it idle for another 5 min and temp maintained at 180-195 range.

There was nothing wrong with 210 degrees, Water gets into engines from condensation, The only way to get it out is boil it out, Water boils at 212 degrees (at sea level). The engine & oil will last longer running at 210 degrees.

my one thing that none of you hit on what size or what hot Plugs are you running 43 R are ok 44 R Ac Delco You might be running to much timing 8 is where you really want it put a timing light on it check your plugs if your going lean you will burn that motor down in a heart beat.Remember if you have checked your tstate and you have a fan clutch and and shroud and your still hot check what i told you to check or buy your self a heat gun and point it at the radiator my be your gauge is off
