coolant temp sensor for a electric fan

Where can you put a coolant sensor on a 1987 305 TBI? I think the temp sensor for the computer is by the thermastat housing, correct? I am not sure where the computer gets it reading from. But where and how can I hook up a temp. sensor for the an electric fan.

Thanks
