Swapped to wolverine hubs,something slipping/grinding
1978 k20 longbed camper special 350 small block turbo 350 automatic tranny.
it had the full time 4x4 front end,and after swapping it out for another front end with locking wolverine hubs, the only way it will grab into gear is in 4x4(hubs locked). it wont ****ft into gear with hubs unlocked at all. after getting into gear with the hubs locked, you can unlock them and drive 2wd for a short distance and it randomly slips out and starts making a slight grinding noise. while trying to shift into gear in 2wd it makes the grinding noise and wont grab in gear and move. whats going on? any advice would be great, believe its a np205 transfer case

Re: Swapped to wolverine hubs, something slipping/grinding
Sounds like a problem with the differential at the back of the transfer case becuase you should not be able to drive it at all with the transfer case in 4 hi (not 4 hi lock) and the hubs unlocked. It works like an open differential and would send all power to the front driveshaft. maybe it is doing this and you do not know. Get underneath and take a look at the front driveshaft while its in gear

Re: Swapped to wolverine hubs, something slipping/grinding
With a np 203 you'll need to leave the front hubs locked all the time until you get a kit to convert it. if you leave the hubs unlocked and put the transfer case in 4-Lock you'll put undo wear on the transfer case.
Whatever the problem is it sounds like you're going to need to drop the T-case out and open it up.

Re: Swapped to wolverine hubs, something slipping/grinding
i figured it out!
i just have to put it in hi and lock the hubs. supposedly the np203 doesnt have a "2wd" gear in it,and the factory frontend was a fulltime 4x4..thus locking the hubs its like the factory frontend. i have been getting told all day from everyone i asked to keep it in hi(NOT hi-lock) and keep the hubs locked and there it is,which is what you drove it in for daily driving from the factory i guess. strange to me,but it works. correst me if im wrong?
