Re: Flooding when hot

Yes it will. The excess fuel that the carb can't put to the motor will go back to the gas tank. That might solve your problem. I'd also put a pressure regulator in, IMO.

Re: Flooding when hot

i have a edelbrock fuel pump on mine, with only 2 ports. i have a similiar problem starting the truck when it's hot. maybe that's my problem, and not the starter.

Re: Flooding when hot

A spacer between the carb/manifold might help, too.

Re: Flooding when hot

engine heat finds its way to the carb base and it boils the gas in it and it floods over into the intake...a simple fix is a carb base gasket ot 1" spacer that will fix it.....

Amen to the spacer. Had the same problem with mine and a spacer made a huge difference.

Re: Flooding when hot

i'm running a two inch phenolic spacer right now, solved the quick running around town starting back up problem. but the starter sounds like it drags if i try to start the truck after jamming down the highway.

zackary027, definitely add a 1" spacer though, it may be as simple a fix as that

Re: Flooding when hot

The starter sounding like it is dragging when trying to start hot is possibly from heat soak if you have headers.

Re: Flooding when hot

Those starters are the same design as the GM high torque mini starters - rectangular square mounting block and small motor. The genuine GM starters are more expensive, but I don't know if they are better. I have a GM high torque mini starter in my 83 BB, and I think it helped hot start issue. I think the GM p/n was 12361146, but be sure to check your application. Cost is like $200+ now at a lot of places. The only think I don't like is that the rectangular mounting block leaves an small open space in the top of the mounting surface of the round opening for the original starter motor. I think I will put a piece of sheet metal over that someday. Here is a picture of the GM OEM starter.

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm

I think the phenolic spacer under the carburetor will help, but I don't want one on my truck because then all of the connections to the original Qjet I have will be off (e.g. air cleaner snorkel tube to exhaust manifold, all linkages, etc.) I had one on my 73 BB and it was a cobbled up mess - but did seem to help hot starts. I just floor the accelerator and keep it down when starting hot and it always starts - not efficient but effective.
