so ive got this 6.0L block at home....
iron gm 6.0 block, just the block. i want to put it together for a motor to put in my truck till i do the full engine build (ive got another block for that).
is it worth trying to locate stock assembly parts for rebuild, or better off going for aftermarket/stroker rebuild? can i stroke without boring? ive got some 317 heads, some 853 heads, stock 6.0 camshaft(told its same as ls1?), stock 6.0 pushrods and rockers, cpl truck intakes with tb's, most everything to put one back together minus a rotating assembly. im not looking for big power, a reliable 300-350hp would be enough. more for fuel economy and reliability than anything, will be used for prolly few yrs till i build the turbo motor. |

I would just go buy a complete unit from a reputable wrecking yard close to you. I think that would be more economical for you to get your truck up and running, then you can work on building your hot motor.

So I pulled a 5.3 apart last night...and have crank, rods, cam, lifters, cam...it was basicly a complete short block.

I'm with Clyde, if your concerned about a budget, buying a complete used assembly would be the most efficient way. You'll spend TONS trying to build it a piece at a time, and it would be a huge headache. I would sell the block and try to find an assembly from CL or your local yard.

I agree. Building a LS can be done on a budget, but not as cheap as getting a junk yard runner.
However if you would like to go ahead with it. The crank and rods out of a 5.3 will fit. No need for a aftermarket crank unless you are planning on taking the engine well above 500hp or want to stroke it, rods maybe. LS1/LS6 cam will fit and be a bit better than the stock one. Most of the gaskets are reusable besides the head gaskets. Head bolts and balancer bolt will need to be replaced. You might want to PM 67shortie. He just did a rebuild on a LQ4. |

ya thats kind of what i was thinkin aswell. i might hold onto it and just over time see what i can collect to put it back together for a spare kick-around incase for some reason i need a motor, or know someone who does. im sure over time i could collect things to build it. dont think its really worth anything to sell eh?

im reading through some threads, and some other information... and it seems that the only difference between the 6.0 and an ls2 is the iron / aluminum blocks. im looking around and seeing an abundance of ls2 rotating assemblies on ls1tech and other sites. i say "budget" but that doesnt mean cheap as possible. i like building engines and am looking for some practise on the gen III 's before i start my big turbo build, so as cheap and easy as a junkyard pullout is, im gonna opt for building! |

I agree with the others here too on picking the right pull out long block is the most cost effective way to go but rebuilding the one you have is an option and still keep a decent budget.
My example, now I did not keep every reciept for parts I bought (labor of love right?) my longblock minus the harness/computer/electricals/brackets/exhaust I am talking long block here is about a $1K and that's reusing the hard parts and valvetrain so just machine work and all wear parts new. All said and done, I have about $3K in this conversion and that's doing pretty much everything myself. Add aftermarket this/that and costs can skyrocket out of control so the more knowledge you ingest the better. In the end, I do have a rebuilt 0 mile LQ4 that has many years of service in it and that's what I wanted.

There's a guy in Calgary selling a complete rotating assembly for $100 I think. He wants $250 for the assembly and a set of 317's.

but found a guy in edmonton selling lq4 guts, good price without the drive/shipping. so ill have those in the next cpl days and im gonna take the assembly and block into the engine shop to have checked before i assmble. keep ya'll posted. |

whoo hoooo!!! so ive got the rotating assembly, looks great but absolutely needs a good clean!!
so heres my big question. i called our local machine shop (my favorite one anyways) and they quoted me about $500 to have it fully cleaned and have it all magnafluxed. now im always a "better safe than sorry" kinda guy and feel this step is a good idea. but im just curious what the engine guru's have to say about it being a necessary one?? $500???? Yikes. Sounds rather high. Maybe he's high!
Typically if a crank is cracked, its no longer in one piece. Not the same for heads and blocks....... Make damn sure the reluctor ring is not bent. Just have them check the big ends of the rods. You cant resize 'cracked' rods anyway. Polish the crank if necessary.... and away you go. LS6 cam is nice addition as well. They are fairly inexpensive in comparison to new cams which are $350 or better. I even think I have an extra one..... let me know if you are interested and I'll see if I still have it............. ya, after some calling around i found another shop thatll clean, flux and polish for $250. ive decided aswell, since im gonna boost it, to replace/upgrade the pistons to a set of forged dished pieces. not decided on which yet, but also need to figure compression i need and what dish of piston to get. time to do some research!
and 5150.4.67 i'll let you know about the cam. i have a feeling itll be a bit pricey to ship up here, but keep it as an option thanks! Last edited by noonzor; 05-15-2011 at 12:09 PM. |
