Can a 98 1500 rear axle work on a 63 3/4 ton?
I have found a rear axle from a (98) Chevy 1500, 3.41 Ratio (I think). I was wondering if it would work on my 1963 3/4 ton pick up. The truck will be a cruiser. occasionally hauling garbage to the dump. At work we have all the tools to cut, grind, weld and modify. I can go buy parts we cant fabricate.
Truck: 1963 Chevy Long Bed engine: 327 (nothing special) Tranny: 350 turbo I believe. Front suspension: Early Classics Drop Spindles disc conversion. Haven't yet decided on what year to go with on this set up. but was told from 71 to 81 will work. Rear suspension: Springs Price for complete axle: $200 My build: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=461989 Also looking at a 76 rear. price $250 All input is welcome. Im open to all advice and suggestions. Thank you, Steve J. |

I would also like to learn more about these axles as I have seen some of these trucks with factory rear disc brakes. Does anyone know what other ratio's are available?
Thanks |

Not sure on the axle tubes, but other than welding on perches (if you have trailing arms) it should be an easy swap. Not sure of the width, either.

I just found out the width is about 64 inches while mine is around 60 1/2 inches. this was not a precise measurement but it is a nearly 3-4 inch difference. that can be significant when lowering. not to sure I want to take the chance.

Depending on your wheel choice, you can make up the difference in width with offset.

Very true, I haven't just yet wrote it off. I will need to buy custom rims any way so it might work out in the end. I just want to do all my homework before i commit. and looking at my last post it seems i have many more options.

Re: Can a 98 1500 rear axle work on a 63 3/4 ton?
The '88-'98 rear differentials measure 64-3/4" WMS to WMS. I don't remember the exact measurement on your original C20 rear differential, but it is somewhere close to that. That said, the '63 to early '70 C10 differentials measure 62" WMS to WMS. Then the late '70 to '87 C10 differentials measure 63-1/2" WMS to WMS. So the '88-'98 is a bit wider than a C10 differential in your truck. It may work if you are OK with running wheels with a deep backspacing. Personally I would look for a '71-'87 rear differential.

Same area. And if I'm correct my c20. Is 60 inches wide. Give or take 1/2 inch. With that said, are the 71-87 similar In width? I measured from inner wheel well to inner wheel well is around 50 1/2 inches. Outer wheel well to outer is around 77 inches.assuming my son put it in the right spot.I can get a 76 for 250. I think its to much personally. Its sitting in a junk yard. Posted via Mobile Device |

WMS is wheel mounting surface. It's the most accurate measurement.

Its been a while but today I stopped by this old wrecking yard called Turners. You talk about knowledge, this old man has it. I told him what I was doing and he already had an answer and the solution. basically he siad measure your WMS and we will find you a match. he's charging 300 plus the core. smart, charge three hundred get my axle and sell that one for 300. crazy old man knows how to swindle. If you need parts for any project I'm sure he has it. heres a link.
