A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
I use my truck as a daily driver and it gets pretty hot in SC. My wife also asked me to put A/C in the truck (or else she wouldn’t be riding with me in the summer). So, I set about it.
I corresponded with CoolAir our board member that works for VinatgeAir and he recommended that I use the VintageAir GEN IV Magnum unit because of it’s superior electronic controls. VintageAir doesn’t make a GEN IV kit specifically for our trucks so I had to do a custom install based on their universal evaporator kit. My truck has a LS2 drive-train from a 2005 SSR and I had the OE Sanden scroll compressor. It mounts low on the passenger side, out of sight so I wanted to maintain that. I also wanted to maintain the ECM control of the compressor. The ECM is set up to protect the compressor and to operate the fans to control the high side pressure, so the fans come on only when needed. I also wanted to minimize the modifications to the truck, no dash chopping, excess hole drilling etc. I couldn’t find a real detailed custom A/C install thread for our trucks to I decided to document what I did so it could maybe help someone else in the same boat. The system works great to date. I would certainly recommend VintageAir. Re: A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
Wow, you did a really nice job! Can you feel the air blowing on your face with the vents mounted below the dash? My '63 is my daily driver and last week it was around 100 every day. It felt like I was sitting in a dang sauna. My only means of cooling down are a $12 fan that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

Re: A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
Thank you for developing and posting this thread. Excellent information and accompanying photos. The thought and workmanship that went into the project are obvious. I also like the x-brace being bolted in (which had never occurred to me). Admittedly it’s a tiny detail in the grand scheme, but a handy modification for anyone keeping the brace. I’ll be doing that to mine the next time there’s an opportunity.
The drain you designed is certainly more professional looking than many of the holes I’ve seen punched in a variety of floors from back in the 60’s when many took the easy route. |

I appreciate your posts and threads, I have learned a lot from them. In fact, I am figuring how I am going to copy your backup light solution for my truck right now. TR

Thanks for the great write-up TR65! You obviously put a lot of work into it, and it's a great resource for anyone doing this installation.
Your info has now become part of the FAQ http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=468521 And thanks to Woogeroo for reporting the thread as a potential FAQ |

Beautiful installation, as usual. One question as I will be doing the same soon, why didn't you use the stock GM compressor?
