350 or 402

I have both and one truck will be a sbc while the one I plan on keeping will be a bbc

how much money you wanna spend is what it boils down to.

I would guess sbc is cheaper to build buy parts for etc than BBC

I think sbc are great, parts are easy to find anywhere and can make a ton of power But bbc sound so cool

I've got a 402 running and driving big block parts truck and I'm having a very hard time deciding if I should put it in my blazer and replace the crate 350 or just sell it and do it another time down the road. If money wasn't an issue, I'd deff put the 402 in a daily driver lol But that's just me

interesting to me to see this thread. there is an all original 72 3/4 ton 2wd in grand forks north dakota with a 402 that looks really clean from the pictures. guy is asking $3600. In champlin minnesota there is a 72 1/2 ton 2wd with a mildly built 350 that also looks really clean for $3200. I want one of these badly and am hoping to look at them soon and hopfully buy one if they are not sold yet. both are on craigslist. is a 402 similar to a 396? I know nothing about a 402.

A 402 is the exact same thing as a 396 with 0.030" more bore. GM did this and many legends as to why are out there. To further cloud things our 67-72 trucks when equipped with a 396 or 402 got 8-400 badges and SPIDS that say 396, 400, or 402 depending on how the person typing them up felt that day.

FWIW, my trusted engine rebuilder, when I asked that same question said don't waste your time on any big block smaller than a 454.

I will temper that comment with "unless you're talking an original, numbers matching situation".

Nephew has a '79 T/A, that had the Olds 403 engine, so out it came and in its place went a 455 that is now a 468! Fuel injected, too.

If you want to be better than a #2 than you must drive a 402

402 for sure. 350 are low on torque in my opinion.

If the word "budget" is anywhere in your thought process, 350 all the way. Isnt really anything 402 can do that the 350 cant do other then drain your wallet

I guess that would be if you wanted to ignore the ground pounding torque feature! There they actually do more than just add extra weight.

Sorry but for equal dollars spent a 350 can produce more hp and torque then that 402 any day of the week.. Small block parts are to cheap to even compare numbers to big blocks, unless your talking numbers matching, get a 454, or stick with a small block, in my opinion of course

i yanked a 350 out of my rig and never looked back. no matter what i did to it it always got 4mpg. my 454 gets at least 10-12, then sold the 350 and got most of the money i paid for the 454 back

Except the ones that end in "Y". You take a little 325HP 396 and re-cam it and sit back and watch the money put into the 350 to play the catch up game. How many 350s start at 325hp? You can certainly spin this debate a lot of different ways but it takes PARTS to really make the 350 roar.....and more torque??? Really??

Big blocks looks better too But that's just personal preference lol To have a 396/402 is more to just say you have one. Up here they are rare engines and I imagine down there depending on where you are they are rare as well. A complete running engine (not rebuilt) is worth $1500 roughly. But with rebuild only worth the same as a stroker 383 lol But the same 350 with no rebuild is only worth $300-500 on a good day. Parts are everywhere for the 350 as well so nothing different or exciting when owning one
