Vortecs from Jegs.
They sound kind of cheap. $259 a head. Does anyone know how they compare to SportsmanII heads or the Dart Iron Eagles? The intake runner on them seems small too.

Vortecs are great if you aren't using a cam with alot of lift, and all that other jazz.. (blah blah blah).
I may infact finish up a vortec headed 355 for my truck while I scrap together the finances for a 383 project. Jeff

vortecs are awsome. I got mine brand new a few years back for $400. Now they are $450-500 a set. BOO HISS!
The small intake runner is a plus on a head if you can still get it to flow enough to support your power levels. The smaller the runner, the higher the volecity=throttle respons and torque. Comparing to the sportsmans, Id take vortecs every time. Darts are awsome heads too. Id take some dart 200cc intakes over vortecs I think.

One thing you guys and gals may not know about them, If you pop your hood around here and have Vortecs on it you will get a rather cold reception because of the words "Hencho In Mexico" cast in to them. Yes they are cheap (for good reason) and yes they have desent flow numbers. I will pass something else on about "four less bolts" on the intake mainifold. These type heads are real hard to keep sealed because of the deleted bolts in the middle of the manifold. Last edited by Mike76251; 04-08-2003 at 02:11 AM. |

Ahhh, hooey. I've been running my vortecs for 4 years in my 84. They are not tough to keep sealed (I don't think I've ever retorqued mine, with Fel-Pro 1255 gaskets). Anyhow, for the money, they can't be beat. For a street driven truck, they work great. If you want 500 horsepower, you will probably have to go with something else, but for around the 300 hp level, tell me about a better head.

well then i guess it would fit right in with my truck then. the original 305 was "Hencho in Mexico".. bigred, you beat me to it. i too plan on going with Vortecs from Scoggin Dickey. aslong with intake and gaskets and hardware..... they make upgraded heads capable of 0.55" of lift. or 0.57" lift.

I run two different vortec motors, one a 415hp 383, and have never had sealing problems. The bolts on the end torque down the only places needing it. Theres nothing in the middle to seal really tightly. Remember, theres no exaust crossover.
Ive been threw at least 23 sets of gaskets from pulling the intakes on both engines, again with no problems. I even overtorqued a intake once due to faulty torque wrench. I smashed the bosses where the bolt head clamps down pretty bad. The intake was fine and still seals great The only thing I would recommend is the re-usable gaskets from GM.
