carb question
I am thinking about getting a new carb for my 66 k10 with a small block chevy. The truck is a daily driver truck, I am wondering what size and make carb you guys would go with?

Re: carb question
I am by no way a carb expert but, for a sbc even with a mild cam etc I would use a 600 cfm carb, Edelbrock or Holley it's your headache. I mean choice...lol.

Re: carb question
I am not sure the size of the engine, just that its a v-8, if i had to guess I would say its not stock and a 305 or a 350. The truck is a daily driver, with the 4sp.

Re: carb question
The biggest headache you'll have with an aftermarket carb is the choke... Neither the Edelbrock or the Holley will work with a stock "hot air" system so you're stuck with a manual choke (which is fine unless you let your gf drive it) or an electric choke. The electric choke would just require a little wiring (oil press sw/relay to do it right) but would give the best results.
500-600 cfm would be the right size. The Edl. carbs are spread bore so you might get just a bit more mpg with them vs. the Holley. |

Re: carb question
I have a 305 with a 500cfm Edelbrock and works perfect. If its a 350 you can go up to a 650cfm.

Re: carb question
Try these guys...http://www.nationalcarburetors.com/
I bought my edelbrock 600cfm from them and I'm happy with it. Also it was under $200.00 for a fully rebuilt one. They have them listed on ebay too, the last I checked.

Re: carb question
i had started a similar thread a while back wondering about Q-jets, since i had an old one that came extra with my truck...i'm currently running an Edelbrock 600 with manual choke on my '66 with 327...but i got a lot of positive feedback towards building & running a Q-jet...so, i plan to eventually get a nice, rebuilt Q-jet for mine

Re: carb question
I used to have a Edelbrock 600 cfm carb. It always gave me trouble. I later bought a rebuilt Rochester 4 bbl Q-jet. I have had no trouble with it sense.
I would definitely have the Q-jet rebuilt. |

Re: carb question
Well , my truck has a 650 dp holley on it now , but not because I like it .. I do have the manual choke hooked up so starting is no problem ... But I will tell you this , in tech school I drove 180 miles one way to school .. The 73 chevy truck I had , had a rochester 4 jet , got about 9 mpg.. I started building carbs during the week to try on the ride home , I found that the Qjet with 74 primary jets got better gas milage than the same carb with 68 jets .. By the time I was done messing with it the truck got 12 miles per gallon ,a 25% increase ..... When I had my repair shop in Maine everyone knew that if it was a Q jet I was the go to guy....

Re: carb question
I have used just about every carb out there at one time or another and I guess it's my need for power but I wouldn't run a Q-jet again even if my only alternative was walking. A carter/edelbrock or even a lil holley can match or out do a Q-jet in economy and bottom line is you cant beat a properly tuned holley for performance. If its a small v-8... 327 or smaller run a 500-600, with a larger (350) stock to mild v-8 run a 600. I wouldn't go over 600 unless you have a rather decent lil street motor or your running a 383 or larger CID motor.
