Paint-Over-Rust products
I am going to paint my chassis in the next few weeks, and was wondering what products you guys have used for painting over rust. My '64 is far from being a show vehicle, but after de-greasing the chassis, there are a bunch of places that have surface rust that I want to cover. My plan is to use a paint-over-rust product, and I plan on brush painting the entire chassis because I don't want to pull the cab and bed just to spray the chassis. I have used POR-15 years ago, but I thought that it was a bit too shiny. I want a semi-flat chassis black finish in an easy to use product that doesn't show brush marks.
What other products besides POR-15 have you guys used? I really like to hear how well they performed and how much they cost.

Re: Paint-Over-Rust products
POR 15 offers a semi-gloss or semi-flat nowadays, so if you liked it but it was just too shiny before, this might be what you're looking for -
http://www.eastwood.com/por-15-semi-...lack-pint.html they also make a chassis-coat, but I'm not sure it's gloss level - http://www.google.com/products/catal...=0CKABEPMCMA8# |

Re: Paint-Over-Rust products
I used POR-15 on my chassis back in 1998, but have been unhappy with its performance. I switched to Zero Rust right after that, and it holds up much better (IMHO). I liked the glassy black shine of the POR, which the Zero Rust does not have. It's a dull black color by comparison.
http://autobodystore.net/Merchant2/m...gory_Code=RCAC Probably the best stuff I ever used however was called Corroless. The guy that invented it used to travel to all the swap meets and sell it like snake oil. I was amazed how well this worked. The bottom of my 46 Ford at the time was bare metal that had sat indoors for years. No cancer but a smooth thin coat of surface rust. I brush painted it with Corroless, then topcoated with catalyzed acrylic enamel. 8 years and 300,000 miles later it still looked like new underneath. I see Corroless has a website now, which isn’t worth very much. http://www.corroless.com/ Based on his age at the time nearly 30 years ago, I assumed he passed away and Eastwood Restoration started marketing the product many years ago. Although they have since dropped the Corroless name on their product, I believe this is the same stuff. At least years ago they advertised it as such: http://www.eastwood.com/rust-encapsulator.html Last edited by markeb01; 08-21-2011 at 01:28 PM. |

Re: Paint-Over-Rust products
I like POR-15 but don't like the gloss black as well. I decided to try Eastwoods chassis black this time around. It came out pretty nice, good coverage and a nice satin finish. One kicker is that they recommend shooting their epoxy primer first then topcoating it with the chassis black for the best durability. Not a big issue just another step and more products to buy. You can check out the pics of the parts I painted in my build thread

Re: Paint-Over-Rust products
I am using Easwood's Rust encapsulator with their satin Extreme chassis black over that. I am very pleased with the way it goes on and the look. They come in rattle cans or ready to spray or brush quarts. I don't have any real world driving time yet, though, so I can't attest to how it will hold up over time.

Re: Paint-Over-Rust products
Any local autoparts store should have a rust converter that converts iron oxide (aka rust) to iron tannate. Then you can clean up the area, prep and paint it. Used it all the time. The local Advanced Auto Parts store here sells Purple Power Rust Converter, and it's done it's job many times. I'm happy with it, and it's cheap.
