Re: Auto trans for 1956 235 engine
The old hydra-matic 0r old cast iron powerglide will fit up to the engine but they are crude heavy monsters. They have adapters to put a modern trans. in like a 350 or 700r4 Hydra-matic. I like the manual shift myself on the old trucks. If I wanted an auto. I would change over to a V-8 engine. Any modern trans. will fit it.

Re: Auto trans for 1956 235 engine
If not mistaken (and I could be) TH350/400 should have same bell pattern as Pglide - so if a Pglide will fit, so should aTH350/400. By "fit" I mean bolt up to - no guarantee it'd clear the tunnel, etc...

Re: Auto trans for 1956 235 engine
The powerglide that Ret is referring to is the old cast iron kind. There was a special adapter that would bolt to the back of the 235 so that that monster of a trans would bolt to the sixes. These same transmissions came behind V8 too but, I don't remember if they had the now common Chevy V bolt pattern or not.

Re: Auto trans for 1956 235 engine
Who s Buffalo Enterprises?
I think that is there name check with them and let me know what parts are included in this swap......besides the drive shaft and rear axle. Neighbor has a 54 Chevy 1/2T and asked me that question. I just removed a Saganaw from my 6 cylinderthat I sold and it looked like it was bolted to the stock bell housing, I have never done anything with the I-6 so I am open to the knowledge about this swap
