Re: pics of cut rear coils
i did it to mine when i lowered it the first 2 times, actually i cut them a few different times (to go even lower), i cut the bottom and just let it rest on the trailing arm... it looked good from the outside, but the ride was pretty horrible, rode pretty stiff, any stiffer and it would have felt like a dump truck. i would personally not recommend it for any thing other than using it to see how low you want to go before buying springs, but nothing more

Re: pics of cut rear coils
I have read that you cant cut the rears due to the design. The coils have a "pig tail" on each end that is used to bolt the coil in place. I think it is physically impossible to cut the coil and be able to reinstall it properly. I think the only thing you "could" do is heat the coil to lower it, but that is highly dangerous. The "cheap" way to do is to use Jeep Wrangler TJ coil springs. I would look in the suspension forum for info on this. Just my .02

Re: pics of cut rear coils
They can be cut but it's not recommended.
They can be bolted back in after being cut but it requires an alternative mounting method on one of the spring ends (top or bottom) or modification to the coil (they won't just bolt back in on each end after being cut). Definitely a ride quality killer....

Re: pics of cut rear coils
Without trying to sound like my dad (a pretty sharp guy though) - DON'T DO IT! - As a matter of fact, Don't talk about it, don't think about it, don't draw a picture of it, ... DON'T DO IT. Yes, I'm sure it's been done, but why? Come on, I've seen fat girls wear skinny jeans and tube tops as well. We're all smarter than this now. These days you can get a set of coils for cheap. If you have to cut something, Go cut the nieghbors lawn for a few extra bucks, then buy some springs. It is up to us to help move these trucks into the future with safe and sensible upgrades, not to ruin them for all time.

That's funny right there, I don't care who you are.

Re: pics of cut rear coils
I know it's a bad idea, and it makes the truck ride like crap, but show me how to do it anyway.
Are you serious? Come on man, spend a few bucks and do it right.

Re: pics of cut rear coils
If you can't afford a pair of springs for the rear, sell the truck and buy a honda!
Springs will be one of the cheapest parts you will buy!

Re: pics of cut rear coils
Seems a bit drastic of a recommendation vs. just waiting to lower it.

Yes, I have done this swap. No, I don't have pics of cut springs installed because I don't recommend doing it & would absolutely not install cut springs on the rear of my truck. I do recommend: waiting purchasing dropped springs lowering blocks As far as people responding harshly (freaking out in your words), you new it was coming.... Quote:

In the case of a set of springs that are pigtailed, they can be cut but that leaves you with no practical way to mount them. You could fab a bracket for them to sit in, but that still wouldn't resolve the issue of them being to short and consequently giving a poor quality ride. If your going to take the time and effort to fab a bracket, why not spend the time to lower it correctly. What you will find on this forum is the senior members do not openly recommend any type of suspension mod that is not safe or consider by most as the most practical way to accomplish your goal. I am going to give you some short and simple advice. "Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt".

Re: pics of cut rear coils
the folks that are telling you NOT to do it have been doing this sort of stuff a long long time. some of the best advice here was given to you, free of charge, by a guy that has forgotten more about truck suspension than any of us could ever hope to know.
just because the advice given is not what you wanted to hear doesn't make it bad advice. p.s. - resorting to name calling isn't gonna make you very many friends. just a friendly f.y.i. |

Re: pics of cut rear coils
if you read my post above, i have actually done this and do not recommend this at all, i had mine this way for like 3.5 years and the ride quality sucked a$$, it was pretty stiff and almost rode like a dump truck, and on top of the cut springs, i had 3" lowering blocks on it for the last 2 years of the 5.5 years i have owned it. i am on bags now so no more cut springs ..... but once again no i dont recommend cutting them for anything other than to see how low you want to go, lowering springs are only about a $100or so for the rear so its not that expensive and the pros of getting lowering springs out weigh the cons of cutting springs by far... oh and i recommend ece for lowering springs, good competitive prices, great service, and fast shipping
edit: and if you want to see some pics take a look in my build thread, their are a few pics in their where you can kinda see them..... |

Re: pics of cut rear coils
Yes, I have cut springs before. Never rears that were double pigtailed.
My truck has 5" rears now, and 3" fronts, that I cut a half coil off. Before, it had stockers that were cut 3 coils in the front ,and the rears were heated enough to make them sag enough that the rear was about 4" lowered. It was awful and scary. I'm pretty sure there were times on the highway that I hit a bump and the back tires came off the ground. Proper shocks and bumpstops will make a world of difference.

Re: pics of cut rear coils
i never said that any of this is bad advice...and im glad that you guys are here to help me out... so besides the ride being bad...why would it not be safe?? when people cut them dont they bolt them back up ? sounds like they cut them and just set them back in place without bolts..

Re: pics of cut rear coils
if you cut the rear springs there is no way to bollt the cut side back up unless you modify or make a new mounting bracket for it if you look at your springs you will notice that the ends of the rear springs are smaller than the center so if cut you remove the small end and your left with no way to remount the rears are not like the fronts i would suggest lowering blocks for a cheap easy quick drop if thats what your wanting

Re: pics of cut rear coils
yes so lets say cut the rears and make a bracket to mount them back in why would it be unsafe? all i can see is the ride would be stiff..? is it unsafe? with bracket.

The method of retaining the spring can possibly interfere w/the available limited space the suspension has to travel on compression. The ride is overly stiff making the suspension unpredictable on bumps & dips on the road. Unpredictable = erratic.
