1986 6.2 2wd "j" code
Hey I just aquired to use, from my dad, a 1986 GMC Half ton 2WD. It has 6.2 "j" code engine and a 700r4 tranny with 3.42 gears. Is this a good set up?

Very good! You should get minimum 15mpg city, but more like 18. And highway will be 22-32mpg, depending on tire size, speed, wind, hills, etc etc.
Great torque and good power. Should last forever!

Sweet!!!! 2wd or 4wd. I have an 83 4x4 with 3.73 gears and I was averaging high 20's for mileage. Unfortunately, I have to rob the engine out of it to get my suburban going. I'm hoping to get a 6.5L turbo diesel for it around tax return time.

Re: 1986 6.2 2wd "j" code
That sounds like a nice set-up. Is this a Suburban,I assume? Nice!!
I've never heard of mileage over low to mid-twenties before. I've owned four 6.2s and never got better than 22 mpg. The 6.5TD gets 5 or less MPG. My '92 gets 15 mpg,it doesn't matter where or how I drive. Take it real easy and it gets 15.5 mpg. I feel that's great and well worth owning.

It is great, but here in Minnesota diesel is $4.00 a gallon and the suburban has a 40 gallon tank. :-(

Well, you are getting 800 or more miles out of that and a 350 would get more like 400. So do the math, you're still ahead.

Re: 1986 6.2 2wd "j" code
That is true! For as rusty as it is, it is a fairly decent truck. The truck runs a heck of alot better than it looks! I do love the mileage. If I had the cash I would love to just purchase it from him and put a clean body on it, and do a mild restore to stock!

One of the many reasons I love my M1009 - I don't have to stop for fuel every time I drive it, not by a loooong shot.
