what motor is this??

I was browsing one of my local junk yards and came across a 79 chevy with a weird motor in it. This is the only pic that I grabbed of it, i know it has spark plugs but is it an old diesel engine? (im not familiar with diesels)

Re: what motor is this??

Yea looks like a pontiac or oldsmobile motor to me just super dirty! It has spark plugs so gas motor cause the diesels work off of glow plugs.

oldsmobile, there is a letter cast into the head in front of the first spark plug. That will give you an idea of what CI it might be.

Re: what motor is this??

Definitely an Olds motor, probably a 350. I'm guessing the truck was originally an Olds Diesel truck, and when that quit working three weeks after it left the lot, someone swapped it with a gas engine because they didn't want to swap transmissions and motor mounts.

Definitely an Olds. And Plague 12 is right. If you look at the VIN and it has a Z in it, it was originally a diesel truck.

Re: what motor is this??

Definitely Olds.

Pontiac would have a 4 bolt valve cover, and the dipstick on the other side.

Re: what motor is this??

Grab it if you can, the diesel blocks had high nickel content for the higher compression. My first ride (74 Olds 88 coupe) had a transplanted 350 diesel convert plant in it and like an idiot I got rid of it.

Re: what motor is this??

My neighbor has a '55 Bel Air Wagon back at home that I helped him with. He has one of these engines in it, and for a stock engine from 1977, it has plenty of "get up and go." It really got the large station wagon to move, I was impressed. The little old 350 Rocket turned out to be a good way to go.

Here is a pic, because we all love pics.

That's our friend's Chevelle beside it.

Re: what motor is this??

Thanks! You should have seen it when he got it.

Needless to say, he's a body guy. I'm more of a mechanical guy myself, I'd rather work on an engine than wet-sand and weld and such.

Re: what motor is this??

Might be one of those 350 diesels, they were junk, there is a 1978 scottsdale 10 sitting in one of the local junk yards, funny thing is, is that its has been sitting there since 1982. The owner of the junk yard owned it and was used as a shop truck and didnt run for sh!t, so instead of returning it to the GM dealer he put it in the junk yard! I grabbed the fender emblems off of it because there EXTREMELY rare, They say Scottsdale 10 diesel.

Re: what motor is this??

I wish I had more pictures of it. He did some neat stuff with it. On the backs of all the seats and in the rear cargo area, he used a nice, light-stained hardwood flooring. When you fold the seats down, it looks like a hardwood floor in the back with stainless trim. It was a cool little touch. Thinking about turning the spare tire carrier into a cooler, too.

Re: what motor is this??

That's definitly an Olds engine. Could be big block or small block, but can't tell from the picture. Judging by the 5 bolt valve covers it's most likely an 80's engine, either 265 or 307.
