60-66 dash paint
I'm getting ready to remove the guage cluster and do some repairs. Before I put it all back together I would like to paint up the guage surround. It appears to be a flat or semi-flat black paint. Can anyone recommend a bomb can paint that closely matches what was original?

Re: 60-66 dash paint
I believe goat is just asking about the surround -it should be silver or black. I prefer the silver if the glovebox trim is also silver.
I sprayed about 4-5 different silvers on a test strip of sheet metal to see what was close to the glovebox silver and original dash surround silver. Ended up just picking one that was close and painting BOTH at the same time - i.e. update your glovebox trim at the same time and it'll be undetectable. I'm pretty sure I picked mine up at a craft shop (Michael's maybe??) and its brand name was Varsol, Varthane, Varsomethingor other... Now, as for getting the glovebox trim off without a blow torch.... that's another thread all by itself... If it's black - well, I always prefer Krylon semi-gloss - but again, depends how faded or not your matching glovebox trim is. Same-same, amy want to paint both. |

Re: 60-66 dash paint
I guess the title is not clear, joko is correct. I am looking to paint the "surround, the "black trim piece that goes around the lense to the guages and holds the ignition, lighter and light switch. Mine currently (originally) is black. The glovebox trim is gone now but it too was black with I believe, silver letters. You have me thinking that I should check out some silver dashes. Were they available in '64? BTW, my truck is a ...'64, I just thought they were all the same. Anyway, I probably should just stick with black so Krylon it is. I have had great results before with that exact paint.

Re: 60-66 dash paint
I have only seen black and silver for the gauge bezel. As far as stock is concerened. I plan to use black with the custom knobs. I think the shiny knob caps provide a good contrast against the black bezel.

Re: 60-66 dash paint
I just painted mine with Duplicolor chrome which looks like polished aluminum to me. Here is a pic....not trying to do anything stock at all by the way.

Re: 60-66 dash paint
here's mine - hard to see the glovebox trim in this pic, but it's the same silver as the gauge surround and the letters are black (I added that - the one that was on it when I bought the truck was ALL silver, even the letters, but didn't look original). This is a good question - I've only seen black and silver too - and always wondered if either was correct - or if both were - and if so, how would one have ordered silver vs. black from the dealer? It's not an option that I know of - or perhaps was silver part of the custom cab pkg??
The one with the Sun STII is the silver color it was before I painted it silver again... (painted it when I had it out to install the in-dash tach and the parking brake light setup). |

Re: 60-66 dash paint
Hey Jocko, I haven't delved into my dash yet, but I was wondering what the other light circles in the dash were for. Is the parking brake light an option and if so, do you know of a source for that stuff?

Re: 60-66 dash paint
It seems to me that 64-65 had black inst cluster surrounds, then in 66 when the dash panel was darker the silver surrounds were used. JMO judging from the ones I've gone thru.

Re: 60-66 dash paint
well... I thought that regular trucks were black and the it was an upgrade with the custom trim package from 64-66.

Re: 60-66 dash paint
My truck is a custom cab and 99.9% certain that the Black dash surround and glove box trim were original to this truck. Thanks for the pictures. Those dashes look nice in silver too!
This reminds me of another question, what is the third hole on the left for? First is the light switch, next is the wiper switch then a third hole. I see some folks have a "delete" cap/plug in the hole.

So, it sounds like the consensus is that 64-65 was black and 66 was silver, regardless of custom cab option, etc?? Last edited by jocko; 11-03-2011 at 12:38 AM. |

Re: 60-66 dash paint
MisterC,
Parking brake light was not an option and there's no source I am aware of that makes it. I forgot to release mine so many times that I made my own. As you noticed, there are two unused lights that were primarily for heavy duty trucks that shared the same dash bezel/gauge cluster. One was for Tandem Lock and one was for Overspeed (I think the 2nd one was for overspeed... ) Anyhoo, since I didn't need either, I made one into a parking brake indicator so I'd stop smokin my brakes. Goal was to make it look as stock as possible as if Mr. Chevrolet himself had put it there. Anyway, here's how I built it if anyone is interested. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=419932 Last edited by jocko; 11-03-2011 at 12:36 AM. |

Re: 60-66 dash paint
to answer the original question you would use "trim black". it will say that on the can. SEM and others supply it and it is self etching
