1957 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup rear end.

I have a 1957 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup with original transmission and rear end. I would like to upgrade to disc brakes. I have been told that to be able to put disc brakes on the rear that I need to change the rear end to a 10 or 12 bolt. If in fact that is true, what type of rear end should I use?? George

Ok,
you actually have several options and they all depend on what your final goal is.

-If you want to stay with 6 lug and you want to keep your original rear end and you are happy with your (probably) 3.90 gears, then there are kits out there that will upgrade your stock rear end to disk brakes. Same concept as upgrading the front using your original hubs. I believe POL is one of the vendors that offers the kit.

-If your goal is to swap out your rear end but stay 6 lug, then I'm not much help in recommending which vehicles offer a suitable rear end but it will have to be about 62 inches wide and will probably require reloating the spring perches.

-If you want to swap out the rear end and go 5 lug, then most folks have been using camaros, s10 blazers and several other donor cars/trucks. Again, you'll need to verify proper width and you'll need to relocate the spring perches.

Bottom Line: The only bolt on option is the disk brake kit for your stock rear. All other options will require cutting & welding.

I'm sure someone way smarter than me will chime in with more info/advice.

Going to replace the gas tank in my 1957 Chevy 3100. After taking the old tank out, I found a plug in the bottom of the tank, and a hole in the floorboard directly below it. I have checked numerous suppliers for a gas tank with a drain plug in it, and nobody has one, nor have they ever heard of a gas tank with a plug in the bottom. The hole in the floorboard has a rubber grommet in it that needs to be replaced. Can I find a gas tank with a plug, and a grommet for the floor?? Any suggestions??

My 56 tank has a plug in it with the hole and grommet. I'm installing a rear tank soon, would consider selling old tank. Its been hot tanked and sealed with new sending unit. Very solid with no issues.

If you use GMC rear axles from 1960 on, they are leaf spring rear ends. THey are 6 lug, and offer more gear ratios. They are also 6 lug, and the correct width. you will have to change out the emergency brake cables though.
