Re: Tailgate Chain Replacement

Mar-K has them. http://www.mar-k.com/what_s_new_at_mar-k.html scroll down the page. You can get replacement links at Napa and Schucks too. Mar-K has an install tech article.

Re: Tailgate Chain Replacement

If your using an original gate and the Mar-K arms you'll need to cut a relief on the side of the gate to allow the arms to pass by the gate as it goes down to the horizontal position.

Re: Tailgate Chain Replacement

If have seen the Mar K stuff and i have their hidden latches. Their stuff is well made, i just cant bring myself to slicing into the side of my tailgate for those reliefs..
There's may be some welding required as a result...

That is a bit spooky and probably not someone wants to do on a finished truck. I don't think it would be a big deal on a tailgate that hadn't been painted yet and those hinges along with the hidden latches would really clean up the back of a custom truck. It looks like I need to put another couple hundred in the truck kitty.

The great thing with their pieces is that you can download any of their very well done (with color photos) instructions and study them before you put out any money and that is a big plus in this guy's book.

Re: Tailgate Chain Replacement

I've thought about something like that too and it would be a lot less expensive. I should have saved the retractable cables that were on the 79 Elkie that we scrapped after my son totaled it. I think they were way too long though.

Re: Tailgate Chain Replacement

Mike,

You didnt have to re welded the seam on the tailgate edges?
How did the cutting go?

if its unpainted i would weld it. but this one was a painted truck. We shot some body panel adhesive between panels and just touched it up. So far so good last I heard. cutting was pretty straight forword. If again unpainted i would use a cut off wheel but the jig saw works with less heat

I have looked all over the internet for information on these. All I can find are the standard bolted cables. Were the retractors a factory or aftermarket option?
